Why Realtor?

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Bayou Properties

What made you decide to enter the world of real estate sales? I find it interesting to discuss this with local folks so I figured a national scale with be even more exciting!

I grew up a railroad brat. By the time I graduated college, I had moved 16 times. For every move we made, there were probably 2-3 "almost moves" in the mix. Pretty much all the time we were getting ready to buy or sell a home.

In high school I would have other kids describe their home. Then I would guess how much their parents paid. Usually I was pretty accurate. But in the interest of full disclosure I must admit that this special skill never got me a date!

After college came a brief stint on the railroad followed by ten years of college teaching. But the love for real estate was always there. Then one day I took the leap. But that's another story...

Hmmm...I wonder...the stories that would surface if anyone found this...it's a very good question, Doug. Me? At first, it was only a means of additional income, but it has taken on a life of its own, as I have discovered more about my area as an agent than I would have ever done as a regular joe, and I am excited just from the opportunities to serve others' real estate needs...

We all have our stories of how we got into the business. Each is unique and love to hear them.

Interesting Doug. I hope you get some good feedback. I pretty much grew up in the business, as my father started his brokerage in 1948. I tried other fields for a while, but nothing felt as good as real estate.

Hi Doug,   My theory is simple:  Every 5-8 years turn the key in the lock, walk away, don't look back !  And go learn something new ( real estate ) .

My accidental segue into the real estate business began when I was searching for my own home in the mid 1980s.  I was enormously frustrated by the process and what I perceived to be a lack of understanding by the professionals of what I was saying.  Though my search proved to be exhausting, and I told myself I never wanted to look at another house as long as I lived, I ultimately recognized a need for an agent who listened and decided I could do the job better.  I've spent all these years trying to remember that early promise I made to myself, to be there for the people who chose to work with me.
