Voicemail Greeting

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with The Tech Byte

telephone voicemailWhat Does your Voicemail Say?

I posted this on the RE/MAX Message Boards and I thought the responses were great, I know there will be lots of valuable insight from the AR members!

I struggled with what I wanted on my outgoing message:

  • Should it be Short and Sweet?
  • Should it be Long and Detailed?
  • Should it change to my Dailly Schedule?
  • Should it give website and email?
  • Should it direct to other phone numbers?
Should it instruct to ring back to front desk?

Right now it is something like.....   (yeah, too long)

Hi you've reached Kim Wood and the Kim Wood Team at RE/MAX Main Line. To bypass this message at anytime and leave one for me, please press #.  Thank you for your call and I'm sorry that I can't answer it at this time. No matter where I am or what I'm doing, I'm working on putting Buyers and Sellers together. You may also visit my website at www.KimWood.net or email me at Kim (at) KimWood.net. Feel free to also leave me a detailed message here and I will return your call.  Agents wishing feedback for a listing I've shown,  please email Feedback (at) KimWood.net. Thank you for your call. Enjoy your day.

haha. Little do they know, even at a kids' game, I'm networking!  I'm open for suggestions - and I'm sure many others will also enjoy reading what YOUR voicemail greeting says.

David! Gary! Rosario!  What does yours say?

Lenn! I have to admit, I love REACHING those short ones :)    re 2nd comment: How on earth are you going to shorten it?

Randy! What does your say?

Miriam! Maybe I am losing people? Yikes!

Anne! Ahhh before the sun sets :)  Nice touch.

DJ! I like those, your commitment of a return time isn't unreasonable either. I've hear "I'll return your call within the hour" then I wait.....

QUESTION FOR ALL .........................  In my voice message, you don't think the "push # to bypass" works to cut it short if you want to? I use that when I'm leaving other people messages a lot.

Short and sweet otherwise people will get tired of listening and hang up before leaving a message.   May lose prospective clients this way.

okay Kim.... good content... but definitely needs to be alot shorter.... give the "good info" upfront and the blah blah at the end....  Just my humble opinion

Mine is way too long, but I try to give people the info that they need.  I give my fax#, my website address, advise if they're agents that the info on MLS is current...,

I've got to cut it down, way down.

I would think your voicemail could be a little shorter.  But I do like how you give an option to skip it and go to leave a message.  I really like how you gave your website and email address in the message.

Kim, I like the way you give the callers the option to bypass the message. I made a call yesterday to an insurance agent who had a similar feature. I didn't mind listening to the message, knowing that I could bypass it at any time. It was interesting to hear what she had to say.

Monika & Desiree & Diane Thanks for the comments, its so hard to figure out what information to leave out. I hope they use the # feature!

Is yours longer than mine, Sylvia? It's hard to weed out what you want to say :)

Thanks Kimberly, I hope people know to use that feature. I use it all the time when I call someone!  And yes, I have gotten people to email me by leaving it on my VM message. Good to "see" you again!

Leon, I do that too, I usually listen the first time I call, then after that # as soon as they start talking :)

DJ Thanks for your tip. I have in my power point presentation for Buyers and Sellers (two different ones) that I work 7 days a week, available day/evening/weekend - I need to note "not 24 hours per day" the schedule does vary!  I'm getting to be more picky about those people that don't respect you have a family than I used to.  Buyers don't usually like to hear there is ANYONE else in your life.

On the rare occasion that someone does reach my voice mail, I always get comments. As an ex-dj I can express my personality of excitement over the voice mail and I do! People are always laughing and saying that voice mail is so you! I even had one client have their husband call back, just to hear the message and you heard as he was hanging up the phone. "That is so Todd!" - I liked it and my customers tell me they also like it. (When they actually get it, which is not often)

Good post, yes time to update my greeting message too. Having had it too long, it is easy to just place one and forget it.

Kim - I like the message you are conveying but do think it could be shortened a bit. I am surprised by all the people that are saying they don't want to wait for the long message to finish...most phone systems allow you to hit the # key and go right into your message.

I think it's best to keep it short and professional. Don't record it while you are standing next to a bus terminal or with your radio blarring in your car. Most of the time when people call you they don't have a pen in their hands...so don't tell them to call you on your home office phone number, or another phone number. Plug your website but all in all...keep it short and to the point.

I am changing mine so that I identify the times I will be able to return calls, each day. I realized how much I appreciate that daily update on other people's phones when I call them. And it helps me in focusing my schedule for the day so I can put it in my phone.
