What "News" Organizations Could Learn From That Fake Pro Wrestling Stuff...

Perhaps one of the more smart manuevers Vince McMahnon made as CEO of the WWE is going against conventional trade wisdom and announcing their product was not a sport, but sports entertainment.  Beyond being able to avoid a given States Athletic Commissions Rule of Law, it opened the doors to evolve an industry from smokey wooden halls into stadiums that consistently seated 50,000 plus fans.  Sure, it pissed off some diehard fans who support the sport of it more than the ritz, yet it also garnered the adoration of folks who couldn't sit through an actual amateur wrestling contest if their life depended on it.

And here I sit and ponder.  I read a few articles just recently on AR about political posts that had a bunch of traffic.  It can be a passionate subject.  I'm a member a few political groups here, and they vary on their opinion.  I would cite none of them as legitamate sources of news, though.  Commentators disguised as such, maybe.  Bringing to light something the reader hadn't known before, perhaps.  Competent Journalism, a BIG "HELL NO."

Personally, I love reading opinions on matters that may or may not affect us.  Whether I agree, am indifferent, or passionately disagree, I would hope to think that I would never stifle such opinions.  Think away, my friends ... think away.

When it comes to the beloved primetime television that now seems to represent the "News", I've got NEWS for them.  It ain't journalism.  It's editorial commentary at its best ... or worst ... depending upon what type of tea you prefer.

Fox News claims to be Fair & Balanced.  That's grand.  I claim to have a higher IQ than my Mother.  My working knowledge is that both statements may be a bit skewed.

In the other corner, you have MSNBC.  From their end, FAUX (as they like to refer to them) is an ultra-right wing militia who just happens to have television time.  That also may be true, but any claims of them being bedside with President Obama is completely off-base.  After-all, they aren't left of center or anything.

What I'm trying to articulate here is quite simple.  Quit trying to shove down our throats what shouldn't be imported up our asses in the first place.  You are what you are, just state it!   As a viewer of said telecasts, it's apparent that I (and I dare say, we) like our television to be a tad skewed.  If it's on T.V., it's probably skewed/scripted/contrived in the first place.  Why hide from that?  That's television, the viewers time to get away from the so-called real world they live in.  Utilize it to brag about those ratings and petty little political wars that your team won ... as you are currently doing.

Learn from Vince.  You aren't journalists or wrestlers; you are commentators & sports entertainers who are constantly putting forth your two pennies.  And that's fine.  FOX is a bit right and MSNBC is a bit left, that's the way I see it.  And from my vantage point, neither is hiding it.  The only thing either organization is hiding is what they really are ... a source of advertising what they are selling.

That's television.

When we rely on the talking heads and comedians for news, we lose our ability to think critically.

Charles - I will and I won't.

Don - While I lean a bit left of center (socially, especially), I tend to agree with you.  Fox does broadcast opposing viewpoints which makes it, in my mind, a bit more fair & balanced than their suppossed counterpart.

On another note, I like the pic and am closing my drapes right about now;)

JL - Can't blame you.  Though my cynical little soul wonders who is running Yahoo's version of the news ...

Yolanda - True that.  And I adore critical thinking, no matter how many silver hairs have grown on my skull because of it.

GREAT post. I agree 100% with your ideas about Fox and MSNBC. I read a comment in the LA Times about a show on one of these networks that applies to most of the programs on both. The reporter said that the program was like an "echo chamber", the guests and the anchor agreed on every issue.

I'm with you and with JL.  I haven't watched the news in quite a while.  My husband watches Fox news whenever he's home and it makes me crazy.

I think the professional  wrestling analogy is very accurate.  In pro wrestling, some people will root for the wrestler they perceive as the good guy and boo the bad guy.  Some people will even root for the bad guy and bee the good guy.  On Fox and MSNBC, some people watch because they love the particular commentator and some people watch because they hate the particular commentator.  In the movie "Private Parts", which was about Howard Stern, the program manager was discussing Howard's ratings with the station manager.  It turned out people who love Howard listen to him 30 minutes a day while people who hate Howard listen to him 45 minutes a day.  As long as they can get your blood boiling, that is all that counts.

Sardi - of course if we agree with the message it is pure, unadulterated, unbiased journalism. But, it isn't limited to FOX and MSNBC. CNN, CBS, NBC and ABC all provide editorial disguised as news.

Just something that got me thinking though, do you ever passionately agree or just save the passion for disagreement?

Nice post Jason, I try to accept that all news has some bias and look at alternative sources for the same news items.  Overseas media, online sites, even government sites, etc.

Cameron - Maybe your soul?  Make a sign and lambaste the bastard;)

Melissa- If I read Tchaka's mission statement correct, it rhymes with keep drinking ... alas, free thinking.

Wallace - Thank you, I suppose.  I initially respect any movement that isn't my own:)  Especially the ones that don't come out of my posterior;)

Tchaka - My bad.  And my apologies.  Of all the Political Groups, I like that one the very much (read~the best).

Dale -  It sounds like you do your due diligence and I can't argue with that.  I can only argue with your conclusion.  Along the merry way, somehow we'll find the answer(s) that we need.

Saunders - You're right, it's not limited to the organizations I layed out here.  And to answer your question, I don't save passion ... I fire it at the appropriate moments.  At least, I'd like to think so.

Paul - I always rooted for the "Bad Guy".  Even though inherently I was and am probably the opposite.  But I got this dark side that keeps on kicking...

Susan- Note to your husband: Watch that channel with your wife and getting laid doesn't happen much.  The only thing sexy about Sean Hannity is the prospect of Glenn Beck coming out with a Snuff Film on the incident.

Charles - As are you.

Tom -  I don't believe that Journalism is totally dead; it has just been replaced, that's all.

I don't trust a word that any of them say anymore.  They just distort the news too much to fit their agendas.

Did you see the CNN report of the Tea Party in Searchlight Nevada.  The CNN anchor says that there were "hundreds, or at least dozens of people there".  I actually had the news on when that was said.  The vision I had was a very small group of people in the middle of the desert.   I kind of thought it sounded like a very small crowd for Sarah Palin.  But they had a live feed from the event so who am I to disagree.  But the crowd was more like 20,000.  Here's a story with the video and an aerial shot of the crowd.  It reminds me of when Ron Paul had about 5000 people at a rally in Philadelphia and they reported that it was a couple hundred.  When you see such distortions it makes you wonder what else they are distorting.

Jason - At least Fox News reports the news and not ignores it until everyone is talking about it - for example ACORN - not one left wing media reported it until FOX News reported the abuses and then CNN said it dropped the ball for not covering it - for obvious reasons - protecting the most left wing president who actually benefited from the likes of ACORN.

Fox News became a lightning rod - because the slanted so called news media refused to report anything that would stop the political machine of Barak Obama - but it started long ago -

With all the attacks on FOX News - it keeps on growing in popularity because at least thet report both sides - even though liberals refuse to acknowledge that - the other news media do not even attempt to have both sides come on and present their case -

I also wanted to share with you this report in about the "media/lobbying complex" that was in the Nation.  Many of those "experts" the news shows have on are being paid by various companies to push opinions in their favor.  And very rarely do they disclose the relationships.  This happens with many former politicians.

Jason, I almost spit my morning tea at the screen on that comment!  I will call you later and give you my husband's phone number!  Maybe you can talk some sense into him!  lol!  This year when we were stuck in the house with the 3 feet he alternated his viewing of Fox News with the weather channel.  ALL DAY!!!  I mean we already know that it's snowing all day.  What in the world could have changed from the last time we checked the weather... 30 minutes ago?  And we already know what everyone on Fox news thinks about EVERYTHING..  what more can they possibly add?   I texted a friend and asked her to "kill me now" and put me out of my misery!

NPR tends to be reasonably balanced.  I am sure Fox will claim all non-Fox media is left wing.

Obama should take off his suit jacket, then drop an elbow on it when speaking at Town Hall meetings.
