I'M IN A FUNK

Well, it's not exactly what you think.  I went back to Nebraska and stayed in Funk, Nebraska.

Funk Nebraska and the COOP Elevator

You can see that Funk isn't a very large community- Population 204.  The economy primarily agricultural and you can see the CO-OP Elevator in the foreground.  They have an elevator, post office, and the Coffee Cup Cafe.

Everyone meets at the Coffee Cup around 9:00 AM or so in the morning for coffee, then around noon for lunch and again around 3:00 PM for afternoon coffee.  If you want to know what's going on in the area, just hang out there for a cup of coffee or lunch and you'll pretty much find out all you need to know.

Even though this is rural America, they raise corn that is over 225 bushels to the acre and have an ethanol plant to make alcohol for your car.  If your car is stopped on the side of the road, someone will still stop and see if you need help.

It's a great life

Great story Gerald, and so much fun to read.  Were you  travelling thru?  They had somewhere for you to stay?  You did not mention a motel or hotel...

My son and his wife and son live in North Platte and I spent 10 days there in March and loved it. Full of friendly folks.

Evelyn,

No hotel, no motel just kind of a wide spot in the road.  My Sister and Brother in law live there.  My wife and her sister went to Washington DC on a girls trip.  He sister insisted on flying out of Omaha because ther are fewer terrorists that would fly from DC to Omaha than Denver.  I lauged at her, and guess what happened last night.  Yep, terrorist activity on a United flight from Ronal Reagon to Denver.  Escorted by F-16's to the ground and then on the tarmac for a couple of hours.

What do I know - Thanks for the comment.

Cameron,

My son lives in Temecula and I've been to Murrieta.  I have to admit I like Temecula a little better.  North Platte is a much larger community.  I'll be posting somthing on the Sandhill Crain migration later that I think you'll like too.

I love this post!  I grew up in middle of nowhere NH in a town of 350 people.  I love small towns and the sense of community you feel - even if you just get to join for a day.

Gee. . . I hope the next time my car breaks-down on the highway, I find myself in "Funk".  I'm sure I'll need a good cup of coffee and a donut while the "locals" repair my vehicle so I can be on-my-way once again.  This place sounds a lot like Mayberry!
