It's tax assessment appeal time again! Now is your chance to file your appeal to reduce the assessed value (and taxes) levied on your home! Regardless of where you live in Cook county, it's your right to appeal! Arlington Heights, Palatine, Mount Prospect, Elk Grove, Schaumburg, Buffalo Grove. It doesn't matter where you live!

Go to the Cook County Board of Review's website for more information and deadlines for other townships: http://www.cookcountyboardofreview.com/ and click on "Residential".
While some folks use an attorney to file, you are free to file yourself to save yourself the expense.
I have found the Wheeling township tax assessor's office of Dan Patlak is very helpful in assisting you with your appeal. Their phone number is: 847-259-1515. Or contact your local assessor's office.
The Assessor's office values your home on a DOLLAR PER SQUARE FOOT basis! Your valuation is considered significantly different if it is more than $2 per square foot off other similar properties. I am told by Assessor's personnel that they consider a home a good candidate for adjustment IF you can document any ONE of the following:
- Your home is assessed above other SIMILAR HOMES within 2-3 blocks of yours (Lack of Uniformity)
- A professional appraisal (usually done to refinance a mortgage) shows its is worth significantly less than appraised
- Sales of similar homes within a 2-3 block area show a significant drop in the value of your home
- The assessor has a significant error(s) in the facts about your property
Depending on what information you have, you may appeal by documenting one or more of the above issues.
