Today - Think like a Thief!

Yesterday I was stuck on the letter "S" and planned to write a piece on home security but instead wrote about the tragic crime that has been on my mind.  Today I woke up with "T" and decided to Think like a Thief.

We have all seen tips about what to do when we go away.  Stop your mail and newspaper or have a neighbor bring it in so the pile doesn't advertise the fact that you are away.  Place lights on automatic timers so they are turned on and off to simulate activity.   These are certainly worthwhile tasks but my concern is not so much for the material possessions that can be replace but more importantly the safety of family members while home.

EXTERIOR precautions make sense to deter criminals when you are home or away.

  • Eliminate the hiding places - Keep bushes trimmed so you can see, especially around the entryways.
  • Lock the doors - consider an additional interior safety bar or lock for extra protection while you are home.
  • Lock the windows - also use supplemental means to prevent opening if the pane of glass is broken.
  • Remove clutter - Ladders, tools, bats or horseshoes can be used to gain entry or as weapons.
  • Security System - A monitored system is good but even just the sign of one can be a deterrent.

INTERIOR protection for you valuables and your family.

  • Keep Cash and Jewlery stored in a safe location that is out of sight.
  • Keep your eyes and ears open for strange sounds or sights at your home and your neighbors.
  • Dogs - if you like animals the security value of a large dog is a plus.
  • Weapons - in a life or death situation strategically placed weapons my save your life.
  • Think - be cautious before you investigate a noise - when in doubt call authorities.

Remember as law abiding citizens we look at the good and tend to forget there are plenty of terrible people in this world.  The turn the other cheek mentality does not always work.  Some crime calls for TERMINATION TIME!

Dan:

Very wise words! Now are you going to practice what you preach? If so you have a busy day ahead of you. Believe you will be trimming bushes, installing safety bars, adding supplemental window locks and removing outside clutter. Do believe we have the dog thing covered : )

Sandra... Actually I was planning to look around the house for the photo opps but couldn't get off the computer... Maybe if I had a nice big breakfast I'd have all the energy required for yard work.

you two crack me up..... you would die if you saw the lack of security in my home.... I do have the weapon and dog thing covered.... but often go to bed with the slider and windows standing wide open.... Of course I do not recommend that for most people :o)

Dan, I am sure that the tragedy that happened to the Petit family will cause many to think about and take safety precautions around their home.  It is unfortunate that we even have to be concerned with the possibility of something like this happening again.

Thesa... Yes, my wife's office is 10 feet from mine with a wall separating us and she comments instead of just yelling... We have never been security nuts and if someone wants to break in and steal stuff they will always find a way.  But the brutality of a recent crime has me thinking I'd want every opportunity to enable me to terminate an intruder before they harm us.

George... Agreed... its certainly non-productive to have to worry about the problems that the court system fails to handle.  Read this morning that there have only been a few capital cases in Connecticut since 1960 and one execution.  At this point I'd volunteer to be the executioner and tell them to set up a production line...  My way is GET IT DONE and move on to the next one!

Dan,

I'm sure the brownies Sandra makes for breakfast will give you the energy you need to get all this done! :) BTW, these are great tips!

Thesa        We also lacked security here. Left doors open, even the dog knew how to get in the house whenever she wanted. However, a very brutal crime in the town next door has everyone on edge, and it has reminded us that no matter how safe you think your town is, this is no longer the case.

Suzanne      I cannot even remember the last time I made brownies! And all this talk of them has made Dan's mouth water for them. All weekend he has been asking "Where are the Brownies?"

Being raised by a single mother, I am quite aware of what is going on around me.  However, I am always amazed at how men don't get it, I had a tell a marketer call me and ask if I was Beth, then stated my address, well after I "freaked out on him" he got that he did not have the best scripted.  All he was trying to do is get me to refinance.

Hi Dan,
Yes, all of these are great tips and suggestions and most of us already know what we SHOULD do, but actually DOING them is the problem.  It makes me sad that we have to even think about this but we definitely do need to.  Sometimes it takes a bad experience to wake us up!

Dan--You bring up some excellent points! It is interesting that you post this as we live in a quiet suburban community and this past week we have heard of several area breakins at businesses, stolen mail and smash and grabs at parks. It can happen anywhere so be vigilant!
