Shift Your Mindset To Match The Market

By
Real Estate Agent with The Dietz Team with Re/Max Realtec

Why is it that every-time I go out to eat, the waiter or waitress is a inactive Realtor?  Why is it, that every time I tell someone that I am a Realtor they reply with "I am sorry to hear that.  My own Mother feels sorry for me.  In all seriousness, this is the best market I have ever been in as a professional Real Estate Agent.  I heard a great quote that would probably apply here: "instead of praying for the rain to stop, we need to learn to dance in the rain."  I LOVE the rain.  Don't get me wrong, I didn't start out liking the rain when our market shifted in 2006.  At first, I denied it until my monthly sold average of 10 homes decreased to 5 and then 3 and my income followed.  However, once I got right and accepted the reality of the market and shifted my mindset, it soon became clear that this was the market I was hoping for for.  So, what is there to love about this crazy buyers market.  Good question.  Here's a list:

  1. Sellers need full time professionals and are willing to pay to get the right agent vs. selling by owner or hiring a discount limited service Realtor.
  2. This is the market where you increase market share.  Don't believe me, check your local board sales statistics today compared to 2006.  I'll bet the top 25 looks a little different today than it did 4 years ago.
  3. First time home buyers can afford to buy again.
  4. Second home and vacation home buyers can afford that home on the beach that they have always wanted.
  5. Move up buyers that have owned their home more than 7 years or who are not upside down on their mortgage should all buy right now.

I could keep going but even I am getting bored so before you click closed and go away, I'll wrap this up with a basic mental diet on how to change your mindset.

  1. Determine what you want and why.  Make it a visual that will propel you through the tough times.  Tough times you say, I thought we were going to love dancing in the rain.  Yes you are but it's going to be hard, almost impossible some days but liefs not about how hard you get hit but how quickly you get up and you will need a POWERFUL why to make you get up.
  2. Create a daily energy routine.  Block time every morning before 9:00 to exercise (laying in the tub and fighting the curent is not exercise), read great books that teach, incourage and motivate, read the bible, pray, meditate and visualize, practice and role play your scripts and review your goals and affirmations.
  3. Call a minimum of 40 people every day between 9:00 and 12:00.  Call your sphere, your past clients, For Sale By Owners and Expired listings.  Ask EVERYONE you talk to for either a referral or an appointment.
  4. Be careful who you associate with.  In life, people are either Eagles or Ducks.  Ducks peck at the ground and quack all day.  Can you guess which one I want you to hang with?   By the way, have you ever noticed that you always see ducks in groups but Eagles always seem to fly solo?
  5. Chose faith over fear.  ALWAYS!!!!!

I hope I motivated at least one person, made someone smile and caused at least one of you to refocus on what a great time it is to be in Real Estate.  If you would like a list of great books to read, please fell free to comment below and I will forward you my list.

John,

You are successful!  You motivated me!  And I just needed that motivation at this minute!  Perfect timing! But I must say that I'm very disappointed that  fighting the current in the tub isn't considered EXERCISE!!!  Are you sure about that?LOL!

Great advice on finding your way to a healthy mindset.  A positive attitude always accomplishes and attracts more than a negative.  There is no doubt that the current market requires extra hard work and adjustments but as you saidthere are definitely pluses to it as well.

Here in Hendersonville and Western NC we love to hear that the Florida market is picking up as that's where many of our seasonal folks come from to escape the Florida summer heat.  Get those homes SOLD and send them up to us to look at summer abodes!

Thanks for a thoughtful post.
