Garfield is a diverse community with many businesses, parks and office complexes. The small borough of Garfield offers the warmth and charm of a long-established, ethnically diverse community.  Several commercial centers offer many fine restaurants, coffee houses, pizza parlors and neighborhood taverns. Midland Avenue and Passaic Street are the two primary commercial streets in Garfield. In addition to restaurants, there are also banks, pharmacies and many delicatessens located along these two thoroughfares.

Garfield is nearby Interstate 80 and the Garden State Parkway. Commuters can drive, take numerous busses from several locations nearby, or ride New Jersey Transit Trains from Garfield Station, from which Hoboken is three stops and Secaucus Junction is two.

The Garfield Public Schools serve students from pre-kindergarten through high school.
Within Garfield there is one preschool, Garfield Preschool, and six K-6 elementary schools. Thomas Jefferson Middle School is for all students in Grades 7 and 8 and students in ninth through twelfth grade attend Garfield High School. Garfield is one of over thirty Abbott School Districts in the State of New Jersey.
