Who painted your picture?

Every agent started somewhere. Most were lured into the real estate world by illusions of making tons of money doing very little work and golfing or enjoying life the remainder of the time. Some were painted an unrealistic picture of the life and times of a Realtor® Since becoming a full time agent I have found that real estate requires more hours than any job I know of in any profession. While it is true we don't lift heavy objects for 8 hours or sweat in a factory on third shift we still put in very long days and sometimes for absolutely nothing. I think if everyone could see the true picture of our day to day business it may alter the career decisions of most. Some would be less likely to try while others may be more persuaded than ever to come aboard.

There are some agents who literally make money by playing golf but the rest of us work hard at staying in the game. Often working nights, weekends and even holidays away from our families just to stay afloat during these tough economic times. Commissions are discounted, putting deals together is tougher than ever and you could drown in the red tape of some transactions. Sellers can't get the price they want, buyers can't get the deal they seen on TV and no one seems to make it through the lenders without a struggle. So if working 16 hour days for sometimes nothing appeals to you, join our merry band of agents.

On the other hand though there is no feeling like knowing you have helped a young couples dream come true or saved a person from sure certain foreclosure with your knowledge and expertise. Those sincere "Thank You's" are the paycheck, the commissions are a bonus. When a bad day at work is driving around with new friends checking out lakefront cottages you know you have a great job. I wouldn't trade my slice of heaven for any job anywhere but it comes at a price. Hard work and staying focused on the end result will win in the end. Knowing what lies ahead will make you a better agent because you won't have false expectations of a job that doesn't exist. Good luck and God Bless.
