This is the kind of vile crap that ruins it for regular, hard-working, deserving people. Not only that, she is a real estate broker. Nice. No wonder people consider us just a step above used car salesmen but below attorneys as a career choice. I sincerely hope Kashawn Monique gets the max 50 years and has to pony up $2.5 mil on top of that. We need more high profile busts like this on a daily basis and maybe these swine will get the idea.

Awwww, that's just wishful thinking. As long as there's Kashawn Monique's in the world, the US Attorney's Office will enjoy full employment.

REAL ESTATE BROKER ADMITS FILING TAX RETURNS THAT FRAUDULENTLY CLAIMED THE FIRST-TIME HOMEBUYER CREDIT

 

        LOS ANGELES – A Tarzana woman pleaded guilty to federal tax charges today, admitting that she filed more than 200 false tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service that sought over $1.3 million in refunds based on fraudulently claimed First-Time Homebuyer Credits and Earned Income Tax Credits.

        Kashawn Monique Savery, a real estate broker who until recently lived in Reseda, pleaded guilty before United States District Judge Dale S. Fischer. Savery pleaded guilty to all of the charges in a criminal information that charged her with 10 counts of making false claims to the United States.

        According to a search warrant executed earlier this year at Savery’s residence, IRS-Criminal Investigation began investigating this matter when an IRS Fraud Detection Center observed suspicious activity, including a group of 231 tax returns for the 2008 tax year that sought more than $1.3 million in refunds. The vast majority of the suspicious tax returns were filed from a computer that IRS investigators determined was located at Savery’s condominium in Reseda. Other suspicious tax returns linked to the same computer have been filed in recent months for the 2009 tax year.

        Savery pleaded guilty to fraudulently filing or causing to be filed 10 tax returns, five of which sought refunds based on the Earned Income Tax Credit, and five of which sought refunds based on the First-Time Homebuyer Credit. The criminal information alleges that the 10 tax returns fraudulently sought nearly $68,000 in refunds. During today’s hearing, Savery admitted being involved in the filing of more fraudulent tax returns – over 200 that sought more than $1.3 million in fraudulent refunds.

        Judge Fischer is scheduled to sentence Savery on October 18. As a result of today’s guilty pleas, Savery faces a maximum statutory sentence of 50 years in federal prison and a $2.5 million fine.

        This case was investigated by IRS-Criminal Investigation.

These articles often remind me of a question. Does anyone know of a website, or general area to find out what happened down the line at sentencing? So many times it seems that we hear of the infraction , arrest, warrant, etc. but we rarely learn the final outcome.

It always boggles my mind at scams committed by brokers and agents.  I guess they truly think they won't get caught.  Livin' the high life temporarily and then to jail.  Hope it was worth it.

And I am not offended by one 4-letter word in a post such as this.

I am uncomfortable with the discussion contained in this post.  It is a violation of Article 15.2 of the Realtor® Code of Ethics to knowingly disparage another Realtor using any means, electronic or written.  Although it appears that you are not making false or misleading statements about what this woman did, your post would have been just as effective if you had not named names.  I trust that these opinions are yours - I'd hate to think that the  Southwest Riverside Association of Realtors condones this type of discussion in a public forum.

Pepole always amaze me when they do things like this...  one other aspect that I am aware of with a  lot of realtors- they do not file their taxes- I am pretty sure that I personally know of about 10 people that do not file taxes at all...

Simply unbelieveable.  I realize this agent had her reasons to do what she did despite breaking the code of ethics rule.  However I agree with a few AR bolgs that there's a time and a place to vent your four-lettered frustrations in a manner that upholds professionalism and respect towards others regardless of their actions.  Yet, I do feel as you do when Realtors do bad things to good people. 

Just trying to make a living out here in the real estate world is difficult enough especially when the market is soft and the economy is unfavorable.  Many agents are trying very hard to market their business and instill trust among both their peers and their prospective clients.  When news such as this are brought forth to the public it only pushes us back in our quest to obtain additional business and promote our profession.  Unfortunately it is Realtors who stay the course, remain humble, ethical and professional that become the victims because it puts every one of us in a light that we really did not deserve to be placed in to.  Call it guilty by association.

#25 Martin - you are wrong. This is a press release and, as such, is public information posted by the DOJ. But thanks for contacting us with your other other inaccuracies. I note you dropped the code of ethics claim by the time you wrote. FYI you can check the WSJ for their latest job rankings - Attorneys #80, Real estate agents - #145. And it's this kind of behavior that puts us there. Sorry you missed the whole point of the article and murmured not a words against the fraud.

Sorry to those offended by my language. I'll remove the offending word for ye with gently sensitivities who can't see past it. The fact is, if you had been as involved in fraud scams as our group has the past four years, I'm afraid you might curse too. Especially when the perpetrator is a real estate broker and that is called out in the press release. We have worked so long and so hard to educate the public to be vigilant. We have worked so hard to educate our members to avoid these pitfalls. We have spent so much time and money letting people know Realtors are part of the solution and not part of the problem - but every time an article like this comes out it wipes out years of effort.

As this is a recent case I'm hoping the DRE revokes her license soon. In the last major fraud case we pursued that resulted in over 200 foreclosed homes and $145 million in fraud damages, it took the DRE over 2 years to yank their license. Of course they just turned to the services of a rent-a-broker and kept it up for another 1 1/2 years until the SEC, FBI and DOJ jumped on. It's amazing that some folks will sell their soul for chump change - you are correct that if they put that much time and energy into a legitimate business they would be very successful anyway.

Oh well, there's a sucker born every minute and two grifters to fleece him of his money.

It is even beyond my comprehension as to how she could do that! Was she helping other people fraudulently claim the credit or was she filing for imaginary people? It would have helped if it was required that a copy of the final HUD report was being attached to the 1040 in order to claim the credit! By cheating like that, this person is stealing from the public! I also hope she gets the maximum sentencing & have her real estate licence revoked.
