Craigs List "Account Suspension" Scam

By
Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Andrew Realty Serfvices

Craigs List is a great tool. I use it to help spread the word about the properties I have for sale and seminars I run. I've had clients use it to sell furniture they no longer need when they're selling a home and buyers use it to get great deals on things they need for their new homes. It's a perfect way to recycle and reuse to everyone's benefit. Unfortunately whenever something is successful, scammers come up with a way to try to make a buck on it.

One of the lastest scams is a phishing email telling you that your Craigs List Account has been suspended.  Here's one that just hit my inbox:

Craigs List

Notice that it looks like it's truly coming from Craigs List, but it's not. The link looks legitimate, but when you hover your mouse over it, you can see that's if you clicked, it would take you to another site, not to Craigs List. The problem is the other site looks just like Craigs List. It's a phishing site and the scammers are fishing to get the login information to your Craigs List account. Let them pull in their line and find it empty. Don't fall for this scam!

Hi Deb ~ The misspellings and typos are always a give-away with this kind of email. Thanks for the heads up.

Very true Liz - but sometimes I scan emails so quickly I don't catch the typos the first time!

I find it amazing that so many people still fall for these kind of things. Why do people fall for this kind of thing when companies rarely ever email any of these kind of notices?

You're right Bill, but the sad fact is people are still taking the bait and giving up their information to these phony sites.

I get dozens of these - they are most annoying! Also I have been having problems with my legit CL account requiring telephone authorization to post ads in Real Estate Offered. It won't permit my telephone number to be verified so I can't post anything... CL has been around for over 10 years and hasn't changed at all. It might be time to update their site.

Thanks for reading my posts Adam.

I haven't run into Cl asking for my phone number yet Randy.  It's only been a few days since my last post.  I wonder if I'll see that next time.

Sylvia - I always report phishing emails to Paypal because they make it easy to forward them to spoof@paypal.com, but I've never seen an email address to report scam emails to CraigsList.  Do you have it?

I have been getting these constantly. I go directly to craigslist webpage and log in and nothing is wrong so I figured it was a scam.

That's the smart way to handle it - log in to your account rather than click on a link in an email.
