Are Realtors working themselves out of a job?

Interesting to hear fellow Realtor's complain about each other and their ways of doing business today.  It seems there is a growing number of Realtors who feel they don't need to return phone calls even to fellow Realtors, whether it is for feedback on showings or follow up for offers submitted or those who keep keys out of lockboxes so no one else can show the properties and the listing agent can bring in their own offers.  The lack of respect toward their own colleagues is quite alarming considering we have enough battles on our hands and we are working toward the same goal...Selling Homes.

The National Association of Realtors Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice spells out our duties to the  three groups we represent:  Clients and Customers, the Public and Realtors. Yes, Realtors!

When will we begin to respect each other and realize we are in this together and in doing so can make these trying times a little more pleasant for all if we conduct ourselves accordingly.  The Pathways to Professionalism are quite clear, Respond to other agents' calls, faxes and emails promptly and courteously., Show courtesy, trust and respect to other real estate professionals., and To be successful in the business, mutual respect is essential.

These sound like easy things to do but unfortunately many Realtors do not nor do they even try to work professionally.

Can you imagine the government stepping in to clean up our industry.  They started to do some housecleaning and look where we are now.   Maybe we should take back our industry and make the Realtors who lack professionalism accountable, then we will all be successful.

I dout the NAR Code of Ethics taught Realtors(R) anything about professional courtesy. If one wants to practise it, no amount of education is required. If one chooses not to, no amount of MANDATORY education will make anyone do as they ought to.

I also think that agents shouldn't blog about on-going business transactions.

Hi Ann-

The hardest-working Realtors are the most responsive. I think that Buyers and Sellers are beginning to figure this out.

Ann,

Even though it is understandable, I think it is a wish list. It is unlikely that we all be accpuntable, professional, polite... we are all different

Ann, one simple statement within our Code of Ethics can cover a lot of ground, "The Golden Rule." So many people can't even get that right.

Let's all do unto others as we would want done unto ourselves!

Thanks for this discussion, Ann.  The hardest working agents I know are the ones who respond quickly, take good care of their clients and work toward a transaction where everyone feels they have been treated fairly.  Perhaps that is part of the "Golden Rule" as Don mentioned.  I do know that Buyers and Sellers respond well to being treated with professionalism and respect.  And it is actually easier to get the job done if I make that my priority!

It's a shame that so many agents are as unresponsive to their clients and other agents as they are but I hope the better ones of us outway them.

Ann, Great post. Prompt and courteous is the only way to be. When agents here do not return calls I know what the real message is....

Ann,

This is a great post, everything you mentioned I've experienced and it seems to be getting worse. A little courtesy does go a long way.
