GO GREEN and SAVE MONEY Like everyone else these days, I am pinching pennies and trying to make my paydays last a lot longer. A couple of weeks ago, our family TV went on the fritz, first thing my husband said was "Great, lets go purchase that BIG flat screen, won't it look super above the fireplace." My response was, remember in the old days -when we would call a TV repair man to come fix the TV. Well, after some discussion, we decided to have the repairman come out to the house to tell us what was up with the TV. $295 later, we have our old TV back up and running; we saved ourselves some cash and I feel like I saved the Earth from another tossed out TV.
We are now looking at saving money on our heating bills. We installed a wood burning stove in our Great Room this year and have experienced some savings on our heating bill already. We recently contracted with an insulation person to blow insulation into our attic. Estimated savings will be 25% on our heating bill plus we will be eligible for the energy saving tax credit. Not only that, but my AC unit will be more efficient with the new insulation installed and I can expect additional savings. I realize that it takes money to do these types of energy improvements, but if you do a cost analysis, I believe that you will recoup your cash within a couple of years. But for me the most important thing is that my heating and electric bill should drop some and again I will be contributing to Mother Earth and the Michigan Economy by hiring a Michigan company to do the work! !
See Below for some easy energy and money saving tips that won't break the bank! I admit that I don't do all of these, but every little bit helps.
*Set your thermostat a few degrees lower in the winter and a few degrees higher in the summer to save on heating and cooling costs.
*Install (CFLs) when your older incandescent bulbs burn out.
*Unplug appliances when you're not using them. Or, use a smart strip that senses when appliances are off and cuts "phantom" or "vampire" energy use.
*Wash clothes in cold water whenever possible. As much as 85 percent of the energy used to machine-wash clothes goes to heating the water. Dry your clothes outside on a clothes line-just like Granny use to doJ
