City of Mesa to host 2nd Annual Falcon Field Open House

The City of Mesa is hosting the 2nd Annual Falcon Field Open House Saturday, April 17 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Falcon Field Airport, 4636 E. Fighter Aces Drive in Mesa (located just north of McKellips Road between Greenfield and Higley Road).  The theme is "Runways, Roads and Rails" and will highlight a variety of transportation displays using Falcon Field Airport as the backdrop for the event.  Admission and parking are free. The Open House will feature static aircraft displays of helicopters, vintage war birds, experimental aircraft and general aviation planes.  Mesa Police Department and MD Helicopters will have helicopters on display, along with the Mesa Fire Department's airport fire truck.   The Commemorative Air Force Museum at Falcon Field will provide an exhibit to showcase the airport's origin as a training base for the British Royal Air Force (RAF) and the U.S. Army Corps pilots during World War II.  Veterans who trained and instructed at Falcon Field during the war will be present to share their memories about the past.
"Falcon Field's proud past and promising future make it one of Mesa's premiere community assets," Mesa Mayor Scott Smith said.  Mayor Smith, District 5 Councilmember Dina Higgins and District 19 State Representative Rich Crandall will be on hand for a Welcoming Ceremony at noon near the fireplace for the original RAF cadets' lounge.
Councilmember Higgins will be hosting a booth that explains Mesa's commitment to being a good neighbor to those living near the airport.  "Our Fly Friendly Program has been making great strides to create a future at Falcon Field that encourages pilots to be respectful of those who live near the airport every time they step into the aircraft's cockpit," Councilmember Higgins said.
The event will emphasize the importance of Falcon Field and surrounding businesses to the community.  "The Open House provides us an opportunity once each year to showcase this important community asset.  Last year's event attracted more than 5,000 visitors and we are expecting an even larger turnout this year," Falcon Field Airport Director Corinne Nystrom said.
In addition to the aircraft displays, the transportation exhibit will include a classic car show, a military vehicle display, model railroads and a remote-control aircraft exhibition.  Food and musical entertainment will be available, along with a special guest appearance by "Freddy the Falcon."
