Retail Market Washington Region Tops Craig RichardsonAs many parts of the county face the most difficult economic times since the Great Depression, the Metropolitan, D.C. area economy continues to perform very well.  One indicator is the retail market.

According to the Washington Business Journal, despite a slight rise in the vacancy rate over a year ago, the region's "retail market is the strongest in the nation."  Specifically, the "area vacancy rate for shopping centers in the first quarter of 2010 was 5.7 percent, up 1.1 percent from the same period in 2009...That number was significantly lower than the national average of 9.5 percent."

Experts sourced in the piece believe the worst is behind us and that supply and demand in the retail market will reach balance in 2012.
