Runners at their marks! Charles County is having it's first half marathon this weekend. The Saint Charles half marathon is being held at the Regency Furniture Stadium in Waldorf, MD, and the organizers are planning for hundreds of runners to show up and participate.

Events like this one are great for Charles County. Although drivers should probably avoid the area around the stadium and Rt. 488 during the event, the half marathon will be a boost to tourism and local businesses. Runners are expected to arrive from several states to participate, and the money they spend will go directly into the local businesses.

For those just starting out or looking to enjoy the outdoors with friends, the event is more than just the half marathon: there is also a fun run at the Indian Head Rail Trail and a 5k run at the stadium.

To be honest, if I tried to run a half marathon, I'd probably collapse on the course about halfway through. I know better than to push myself like that, but I admire the people who can muster the strength to make it through.

Not to be left out, I will be running in the 5k on Sunday! Interestingly enough, the 5k is being sponsored by Michelob Ultra, which officially makes it a beer run! Here's a rundown of the events:

SaturdaySunday, April 17-18, 2010 9 am – Rail Trail Fun Run (Sat) 8 am – Half Marathon (Sun) 8:15 am5K Run (Sun) Post Race Party & Finish Line Celebration

Anyone can come out, and registration is still open! Visit the official website at http://www.stcharleshalfmarathon.com and I hope to see you there!

I'm going to run the 5k beer run, but I'm not in shape for the half marathon.  I will be in it next year though!
