Spring is when the turtles come out in Lake City, Georgia.
Lake City, GA has a secret. We who know about it are probably guilty of holding it close for purely selfish reasons -- we want to keep it pristine and natural as it is now. But I'll share the secret with you.
It's Reynolds Preserve -- a little gem of a wildlife sanctuary hidden in plain sight just a few blocks from all of the hustle and bustle of Jonesboro Road, a busy thoroughfare that runs south from Atlanta, through Forest Park, Conley, Lake City, Morrow and Jonesboro. The beautifully wooded hills of the Preserve provide sanctuary for wildlife and humans alike.
It is my favorite place to get in a little rigorous walking. I can't quite call it hiking, with such wide and well-cleared trails, But the hilly terrain actually provides a quite vigorous workout, as area bike riders, runners and high school and college athletes will attest..
Today was a Grandma-Grandson Saturday, and we filled it with a springtime stroll in the park and a lovely visit with our favorite community of turtles. I don't know if you can make them out, but the big pond at the south end of the preserve is home to several species of water turtles. Not to mention ducks, geese, muskrats, and lots and lots of fish. All protected and beloved of we who find solace and inspiration there.
So, when you're in need of a little chill-out time, an in-town get-away, some refresh air and a change of perspective, try an uplifting and energizing walk among the trees, flowers and wildlife at Reynolds preserve.
Keep your eyes peeled for critter sightings, large and small. And plan to spend a little time with the denizens of the pond.
Maybe we'll run into you there.
