Finally, it looks like Spring is on the way. Winter has just dragged on and on while teasing us with a sporadic day of sunshine here and there. Spring will be short because summer is almost here, which means it is time for us to get ready to enjoy some time outdoors with friends and family.
Churchill County is full of many opportunities you can take advantage of as the temperatures start to climb. If you are looking for a perfect family weekend getaway this summer without spending a lot of money, take the family to Lahontan Reservoir. You don't have to be an expert camper or a wiz in the water to enjoy everything available to us right in our own backyard.
You may ask, "What do I need to camp"?. The answer is simple, all you need is the spirit of adventure, a joy of the outdoors and a decent amount of bug spray. Include a tent and some food and you can have yourself an incredible time. Enjoy family time with your loved ones with no distractions, sleep under the stars and enjoy playing in the lake together.
Forget the cell phone and computer and pay attention to the people in your life who matter the most. At Lahontan, there is a small entrace fee of $5 charged for Nevada residents and some additional fees for camping and boating. You can spend more than one night or a whole weekend there, The many recreation options available including fishing, as the reservoir is always well stocked with game fish. There are several areas for camping with decent restrooms and facilities for those people not wanting to be without all the comforts of home.
For additional information on the reservoir and water levels, you can call them at 775-867-3500. However, if camping isn't your style, there are still plenty of things that can be done right here in Fallon. You can break out your favorite tube and float the river. There is something to be said about a lazy day just floating peaceably down a river under the hot sun.
Another great idea is a backyard BBQ and show off all your cooking skills? Bring out the volleyball net, croquet set or horseshoes. Let the kids run through the sprinkler while the hamburgers sizzle.
If you are looking for a more structured recreational activity use the Churchill County Parks and Recreation Department, they are only a phone call away. Different programs are available each month for groups of all ages, from youth to adult, the choices are varied. From sports camps to the outdoor 4x4 field trips, there is something for everyone. You can always let the department know if there is something not available that you are interested in.
Feel free to be as creative as you want and do whatever you can to have fun. The summer is the best time to get out and see nature's beauty and spend it with friends and family.
