How Small Would you Go?

How small would you go in your next home?

I was reading an article at Natural Home Magazine talking about "Tiny Texas Homes". Hmmm...it's a cool idea, and I wonder how likely it's to catch on in the American culture.

Tiny Texas House

JohnHancockTowerI remember a time when I lived for a few months in a little studio suite in Chicago - teeny tiny kitchen with teeny tiny appliances. The living room by day- bedroom at night room had a Murphy Bed (totally cool) and my livingroom (bedroom) window view was the John Hancock Tower. Daily maid service and everything I needed within walking distance. That was a good time.

At the same time, it was always a relief to get back to my condo in Atlanta where I had a roomy 1400 s.f. condo to roam around in. Space is good.

Will Americans give up the 300 s.f. bathrooms for the utilitiarian 600 s.f. home? What would happen to all those big screen t.v.s?

Before moving to Washington, I lived in a 400 sq. foot bungalow in huntington Beach. It ws just perfect for my lifestyle. Enough room for me and easy to keep clean. My life was much simpler then.

You know, these day, we all like big houses. I would say 50 years ago, a typical house would be a 2 bedroom and 1 bath. Nowadays, a typical home that a first time home buyer in Dallas TX would look for would be 4 bedrooms, 2 baths and 2500 sq ft.

Mike, and so do we need more? Is it a symptom of affluence?

I would go smaller... we have 2,500 sf now, and half is ok with me. I would want to buy another income property to help make the difference.

Interesting question.  Most of us at one time or another have lived in a tiny place along the way to where we are today.  Personally I would live in a smaller place < 1000 sq ft, but I do believe for convenience any place needs at least two baths!  I also think the outdoor space is going to be more important in the future than all the indoor space.

I believe most people have realized that bigger is not better. A paid off smaller home is my goal.

I think once the kids are gone and my wife and I are on the road most of the time, this would be the perfect home for us and I certainly would consider owning one.

Paul, I agree with you about minimum of 2 bathrooms!

Todd - even after the kids are gone, the grandkids will be coming to visit. Of course, living in a motorhome means you can visit and leave when you're ready...
