I've been going to "the island" for about 28 years now. What a perfect get-a-way place! I know Patricia Kennedy was just up on the Cape, you can read about it in her blogs. You really can get away and relax (if you aren't like Pat sneaking away to check your voicemail :)
I'm focusing on a few highlights of Martha's Vineyard (10 miles by 20 miles) ......
There are plenty of fun things to do, if you like the "Action" vacation. You can also fill time just relaxing on the many beaches. There are gorgeous views from just about anywhere!
My daughters followed in my footsteps, going there every summer and working in my Grandparents' stores. wind's up! began in 1962. It continues to be a place on the Lagoon (on Beach Rd in between Oak Bluffs & Vineyard Haven) to rent Sailboats, Sailboards/Windsurfers, or take some lessons. They'll even deliver items for a long stay! They now also have Kayaks and Canoes, complete with a store that offers swim suits, sunglasses, clothing, shoes, and so much more! If you visited in the 80's, you would also remember their quick-food (I can't call it 'fast' - too much junk is associated with that name) restaurant, Portside. Yummmm their Frappes & Lobster Rolls were out of this world!
My father, has the only car lot on the island, opening it a few years ago. Check the cars out, and the unbeatable finders service for luxury used cars he offers! McCurdy Motorcars is located in between Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs. Tell him Kim sent you, I'm sure you'll get a special deal :)
I wrote a blog about doing whatever it takes. If you know anyone who is an acclaimed artist, with public recognition, you know that is not an easy task! Whether it be a musician, sculpture, jeweler, etc. Let me tell you about a Vineyard artist that I'm so proud of,my stepmother, Jennifer McCurdy! She is an amazing potter, and has won numerous awards. Most recently, she has been asked to be a Juror at one of the prime shows (ahhhh I forget which one!). She has done, and continues to do what it takes - its hard work, long hours, definite determination!

Flying Horses Carosel is oldest operating platform carosel. You can still catch the brass ring! And rides are only $1.50 !
The Black Dog Tavern great place to eat in Vineyard Haven. You still see the shirts everywhere if you know them. It's become a little too commercialized for me now, but still thought they were worth a mention.
The West Tisbury Farmer's Market has a great variety like fresh flowers, homemade papers, jams, jellies, cookies, grass drinks, herbs, therapeutic lotions, and so much more. Outside of Grange Hall Saturdays and Wednesdays 9a-12n from June-August.
The Bike Path near the airport is one of the best, which has about 15 miles of Bike Paths. Its located within the Manuel F. Correllus State Park near the center of the island with 5,100 acres.
Zapotec is one of the best eateries in Oak Bluffs, but a lot of people know that, so get there and prepare for a wait! Mexican food while on the Vineyard? Why not!
Livingston Taylor performs an amazing concert on the island every year. It used to be in Edgartown, but I believe its in Oak Bluffs this year! And while I'm speaking of the Taylor Musicians,I was first introduced to Ben Taylor during a short concert with Carly Simon (his mom) at her store, Midnight Farm in Vineyard Haven. He has a scheduled concert in September on island.
I hope you can get there someday. I look forward to my quick visit to pick up Kayla (my daughter) later this month (August 07).
