Brief Encounters That Enrich Ours & Others Lives.

The waitress was … lets use the word abbreviated … when she took my order. No exchange of pleasantries just “have you decided?” … she leaves … returns with my order … no offer to refill my beverage … drops off the bill and disappears.

I was in the middle of a six hour trip from one end of the valley to the other, picking up documents, getting documents signed, meeting other realtors, delivering subject removals … fighting traffic both ways. I needed a happy soul serving me but alas it was not to be.

When I was paying her a voice blurted out, “Are you okay?” She looked at me, let out a sigh and said, “ I had brain surgery a few months ago and because I have no feeling in half of my head I can’t feel the pain coming until its too late and it hurts so much I want to cry.”.

We chatted for a few minutes. I told her I understood as I experience constant and chronic pain and when I left she smiled, thanked me and wished me a good night.

A tenet of my faith is to support my fellow humans.

This young woman had her spirits lifted because of three little words, Are you okay?

What happened was that both our spirits were lifted.

How curious it is that when I take the focus off myself and turn that attention to someone else that my life improves. When we consider others we all reach new heights.

Yes, we often make assumption about one's behavior which may be totally off base.  It reminds me of a similar story in the 7 Habits book.

Very true Bob, sometimes we can be easily annoyed by other people's behaviour without ever giving those other people the benefit of the doubt.

Bob,

It's very easy to be inwardly focussed. I'm glad you posted this. And, I'm glad you asked the question.
