Thunderstorm Voo-Doo?

By
Real Estate Agent with Future Home Realty

I was awakened this morning about 12:30 a.m. by an enormous flash of lightning that I could see through my lightningclosed and sleeping eyelids.

It was incredibly bright!

Baxter EdwardsBeside me, my oldest Beagle, Baxter, was shaking like a leaf and panting horribly. He was not afraid of thunderstorms until Florida was hit by a succession of hurricanes a couple of years ago. Now he shakes, rattles and rolls every time it thunders (which is a LOT during a Florida summer!)

I called my daughter in Pacifica, California because she's worked around animals all her life - plus it was only 9:30 pm in California...

She told me to rub Baxter all over with a dryer sheet. Huh? Did I hear that right?

She repeated her instruction, I said OK, hung up the phone, and dutifully rubbed my shaking, shivering, scared-to-death dog with a dryer sheet.  He loved it...

He immediately stopped shaking. He stopped whimpering. He stopped panting and drooling. He went back to sleep!

I know a miracle when I see one!

We slept right through the remainder of the storm.

I checked around on the Internet and the theory is that the static electricity produced by an oncoming thunderstorm makes animals VERY uncomfortable. All I know is...it works! If it's voo-doo...who cares?

We have a dog who is terrified of storms - I will try it. If it works, I owe you big time.

Seriously?!  OMG, I'll have to try it.  I can't imagine it will help with Pepper, he's even afraid of the sound of the fountain in our neighbor's pool -- sounds too much like rain.  (No, he is not a guard dog.)

Hi Paula and Sarah, I know it sounds just ridiculous.  But it worked for Baxter, and it worked right away.  My whole family is simply amazed!

Peggy that is so awesome!  My remaining dog practically tries to climb up inside my shorts during a thunderstorm, and we've been having some dillies lately (climate change?) so I'm going to give that a try.  I wonder if we could do it as preventative medicine?  Rub our dogs down when we know a storm is on its way but hasn't arrived yet?  THANKS!

Terry, I hope it works for all of you who try it.  Our dogs suffer so when they are afraid, don't they?  It's hard to watch.  Try it next time and let us know how it works for your doggie.

Dryer sheet. Okay...my doggie doesn't get too afraid of anything...yet. I tell you what though....when we take clothes out of the dryer and if we drop clothing or the warm dryer sheet on the floor she starts rolling in it. :)

WOW!  I wish I had known about this 10+ years ago.  We had a dog that was absolutely terrified of a soft rain let alone a storm.  She had been abused and chained out in the rain and would absolutely tremble so hard her joints would pop.  I had to dose her with Benadryl every time it rained.  Poor thing didn't know if she was coming or going.

Thanks for the tip.  If I ever adopt another scaredy cat/dog I will certainly remember this one!

You've got to be kidding me.  My dog doesn't like 4th of July or New Years because the firecrackers sound like thunder.  Did she say if we should use Bounce or Downey?  :)

Hi everyone, I can't explain it - I just know it worked for Baxter.  As a matter of fact, the lightning and thunder rolled in about 30 minutes ago, I rubbed him with the sheet, and he is sleeping like a baby.  I am just amazed at this and so glad I tried it.

The results are in.  We had a mild thunderstorm today, and before I could even hear the thunder I tried the dryer sheet thing.  Sorry, it didn't work.  The only thing that does is when they lose most of their hearing!  At least thats what I've experienced.

It's your dog, but I would NOT suggest this!  Dryer sheets are HIGHLY toxic.  Look it up.

Hi Johnny,  I did check into the toxicity issue.  Dryer sheets are toxic to the same degree that our perfumes and laundry detergents are.  At this time, I'm OK with that.  I'd have to see more studies before I'd stop using any of these household items.  And, the dryer sheets ABSOLUTELY work for my Beagle!  Thanks for stopping by!
