Spooky Stanley Hotel in Estes Park

Greetings from Estes Park!

We are having one of those spring weather patterns, that if it was a little bit colder, we would have 5 feet of snow on the ground. Fortunately, it's raining with those wispy clouds that hang on the mountainside.

The Stanley Hotel is always a great subject for a photo, but I especially love the way it looks when its gray and spooky outside. Stephen King drove up to Estes Park years ago just after Trail Ridge Road had closed and the Stanley was packing it up for the winter...that inspired his book "The Shining". The movie version was filmed at the Timberlane Lodge in Mt. Hood, Oregon, but the mini-series directed by Mr. King himself was filmed right here...right about this time of the year. They had to truck snow in from Rocky Mountain National Park...another one of those Mother Nature with PMS episodes! The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado

I love shots when the clouds drift below the mountains. Usually I think of it more as magical, but now that you mention Steven King ...

Those clouds are the perfect background for the hotel.  Nice shot.

Have always loved the Stanley Hotel.  You captured those clouds perfectly!  Hope you are done with snow for a few month!  :-)

Hi Marcia...guess what it's doing right now...looks like a winter wonderland. It would actually be one if this were December!

Hi Lisa,  I love the photo of the Stanley, I think the clouds are the perfect touch. It seems most of the story happened in the snow, we need another photo with our new April (snow) showers! LOL

Lisa, Yeah, I know, the snow isn't done yet.  One year I was supposed to play tennis in Denver on Jun 9th.  It was so cold and rainy that we went to A-basin and skied on two feet of new snow!  :-)
