365 Things To Do In...

By
Real Estate Agent with HER Realtors

The "official" vs. the "original"  '365 Things To Do...'  pages

365 Things to do....  I started my Facebook '365 Things To Do In Columbus Ohio' page in March, inspired by seeing one from Kristy Owen in Austin Texas (below.)

Dale Chumbley a Facebook page for Vancouver Washington:  365 Things To Do In Vancouver, WA

Kristy Owen did a Facebook page for Austin Texas:  365 Things To Do In Austin Texas

Jirius Isaac did a Facebook page for  Seattle: 365 Things To Do In Seattle

I believe I read about 365 Things To Do In Missoula MT ... Monica Ray started it...  Monica did a 365 Things To Do In Missoula MT, I think she may have been on the cutting edge and I remember the story about forgetting about it and coming back and it was alive... with locals.  Does Mike Mueller tell that story in Facebook class.

The "365 Things To Do...." pages are non marketing marketing... pages.

The original "365 Things To Do In Columbus Ohio'  page

On March 10, 2010 I started '365 Things To Do In Columbus Ohio'

On April 10, 2010 I started doing a bit more by tying it into my blog, ColumbusBestBlog.com based on something Ribeezie tweeted and a conversation on Twitter with Dale Chumbley.  Dale's Facebook page is tied into his blog, Clark County Real Estate Guide

ColumbusBestBlog.com has a "365 Things" tab now ....  following Dale's example

365 Things Tab on ColumbusBestBlog.com

On April 12, 2010 another site started publishing "365 Things To Do In Columbus"

They call themselves the "official" 365 Site...

The "official"  '365 Things To Do In Columbus' site is more popular.

;- (

It is part of a group of city pages:

"Website:
http://city365.org
Company Overview:
City365 is a new publishing company that exists to help people rediscover the city. We run a network of over 200 city-focused pages that produce a daily suggestion on awesome things to do in the city. Become a fan to subscribe!"

Jirius is in the same boat... there is another "365 Things To Do" page for Seattle that is part of city365.org

What to do? Poll!

I know there are 365 Day Pages for other cities...  not sure which are part of a publishing company, which were started by RE people...  What would you do?  Keep on?  Abandon your page?

Maureen, I think I would keep going. As RE professional, you do this to attract prospects, the other sites may be more popular but they are not targeting a particular group.

Im planning on doing something like this, but I think im going to do a 52 week program. I dont have the time to do one everyday to the fullest that it deserves. So I figured I would try 52 weeks and I can focus more in depth on one a week. I hope it works.

I am NOT doing it the way Dale is doing it... each person can certainly put their own spin on their Facebook page, it is not like there is a formula to follow.  I listened to the Roost webinar and have to say I was "put off" by one of the RE social media experts concerns about time and whether she could recommend it....  ???  I don't know if I even understood how dedicated Dale is until listening to that webinar.  His page is wonderful.

52 weeks is interesting.

I had three people in 44 days step up and add a post.  That's what I want, not me telling them each and every day.  Then I wrote quick posts on my blog for their items.. or at least th last two.

I understand the page Monica and Kevin started was a photography page about Missoula...  maybe somehow it got mingled in my mind.  Possibley  something said at the Roost webinar this week...

that explains why I can not find it.  Thanks for the info Monica.

Mo - It was probably me.  On the competing marketing company coming in and stealing your thunder, THAT SUCKS!    They are most likely spam minded people.

I've got good news and bad news for you and everyone who has a 365 Page, or "Life if Sunny Acres" page...

Facebook might just take that page away from them (or you) and run it themselves.  I warned about that here: http://activerain.com/blogsview/1583017/365-things-they-might-take-away-from-you-

Will they do this?  I'm thinking YES!  What if you created a page around your passion for ZZZZZZZZZ's?  Is that a community?  Technically no - but then again it also isn't a

"person, business, band or product"

and that's what the TOS for Pages says.  The same could be said for any community page right?  Well the I HEART Sleep Page actually was taken over by Facebook.  What happened when they did?  Here's a post on that:

I heard a bit about this on the Roost call... just the other day so I was looking for more on that yesterday...

So the big marketing Co... ( I am sure done by someone just as local as me...) could lose theirs as well?  Or are they a business?

If Dale is posting the info on his WP.org blog as well... he still has that content?

How about the Breaking News Pages  for a community?  Are they

"person, business, band or product"?

If you buy into that is there the same joepardy of it being taken over by Facebook?

Stealing ideas...phooey....and it is a good one...i know you could find 365 ideas here starting with sampling at least 200 kinds of sausage at Usinger's...another 50 kinds of cheese next door...and then there's the spice shop across the street....

I am not sure that they are stealing my idea or even are aware of mine.  It is an internet meme, a viral idea.  That's why I followed Kristy...

I looked to see if anyone local was doing 365 before I started mine.

Thanks so much for this post, and answer Mike. I just created a page for my city, but might not want to waste my time.

The key to these types of ideas is keeping them fresh and making them your own. Realize before you start that this could easily become a full time job. Also realize that you don't want to build up a huge fan base and then fail.

Imagine this: 5,517 fans and you miss things 181 through 196! don't start it if you can't finish it. You may want to keep blogging at your regular pace and focus on your regular keywords.

I would also be aware of "wanna be syndrome." Don't start it if you aren't going to be as good or better than the others in your market. Dale is right here in my backyard. Do you think that I am going to steal his idea and start a "Things to do in Vancouver" blog? Heck no! I have my own "365" blog but it has nothing to do with his and I don't want to be the guy who tried to be like Dale.

I've been thinking about doing something like this, I'm kind of afraid like Mark above says what if I get a bunch of fans than screw up. I kind of like that idea about 52 weeks or I may even do 30 days at a time...I don't know yet, definetly a great idea though!!

Thanks for the input Mark

Nichole or Monique  I started my page on March 10, 2010 so by my calculations I should be at 106 and I am going to be putting up 103 today... I did one this morning and did not number it, I often do more than one "THING" a day so I think I am doing fine. Of course I have blogged steadily since 2005 so I was not real concerned that I would abandon it.

I have  three new fans today, so the Facebook page is growing.  I have it set up so that people can add things themselves and I have had 5 or 6 "THINGS"  added by people (fans of the page) :

  • Dublin Irish Festival (added by someone in a Celtic band... not playing but obviously he has an interest. )
  • Yoga classes by one of the owners of the yoga studio I believe
  • A motorcycle club the local chapter
  • A big annual games event that is this weekend
  • A spring event at one of the local German clubs
  • A biking event

The story about  Monica in Montanna is that the page she started they did NOT keep up with but the fans built it.  It is NOT a 365 Things page... but it is local.  She came back to a thriving community page.  Is that screwing up?  I don't believe that's how it was presented in Mike's presentation.

It was a good thing.

I am NOT a big  Facebook person  but  I am trying to have some presence there because it is a bit different than a blog. Read Soci@l.    I am glad I heard about how Dale worked his WordPress blog into his '365 Things to do" local page  because I have been doing that part of it, the things Fans add I add to CBB (my WordPress.org blog .)  That's probably about the only thing alike about our "365 Things To Do" efforts.

It would be hard for me to do something every week or every ten days.

Mark's page does not have anything to do with Facebook from what I can tell, it's a theme or a meme on his ActiveRain blog, big difference is he is talking to peers.  Most of the 365 pages are for conversations with the locals... about local stuff... mostly things.
