I am a firm believer that things do happen for a reason! About a week ago I read a blog about Tom Ferry's new book LIFE BY DESIGN. My first thought was, Oh yeah another self-help book! But they included a sample chapter that outlines hard questions that you should ask yourself and an exercise to ask 5 people who know you well to give you an honest opinion of how they see you! I read the chapter and went thru the exercises and realized that in most areas of my life I am just floating thru life without a plan! The chapter asks you to look at your personal life, your profession and how much planning and effort you put into your health and vitality. I have read a few of the other posts of folks in this forum and most seem to reach the conclusion that yes they were living their LIFE BY DESIGN! Well I have to admit I fall on the other side of that argument. In at at least 2 of the 3 areas I am definitely LIVING MY LIFE BY DEFAULT!! I am quite happy with my personal life. I am still happily married after 34 years and have a great relationship with my children and really most people in general.
However, the amount of time I put into working a good business plan is woefully little! I find that I am guilty of going from one deal or a few deals at a time to the next thing that comes along. Did this happen overnite? Of course not!! It would be easy to blame it on the market conditions but after taking a hard look at my business, I see that I am gradually been falling into the old axiom- " If you fail to plan, then you are planning to fail!
The second area that I see is that I never seem to have enough energy and while it would be easy to say I am just getting old, i realize I used to have more of a regimen of working out at least every other day and I kept telling myself I would get back into an exercise routine as soon as winter was over!! Well winter IS over and here I am baring my soul for all to see that I have gotten fat and lazy! I have been fornutate to be blessed with good health and have come to realize that I have also taken that for granted and LIVING BY DEFAULT in that area of my life.
The bottom line is this, I am glad I stumbled onto the post about LIFE BY DESIGN and if the rest of the book is as thought-provoking as the chapter I read, then I am ordering it and unless you feel you dont need to make any improvements in your life I suggest you do the same.
