Guilford - A Neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia

Sandwiched between Kingstown and Rose Hill, Guilford is an old section of the Franconia region that is both Alexandria and Fairfax.  That is, sporting an Alexandria address, but existing in Fairfax County, Guilford is one of those communities where time has stood still while so much has popped up around it.

Bounded on the north by Franconia Road, the east by Rose Hill Drive, the south by Telegraph Road, and the west by South Van Dorn Street, Guilford is comprised mostly of older, detached homes which are typically small and sitting on larger plots of land.  A half acre lot is not uncommon, and indeed, some houses there do not complete their highest and best use as they take up two lots.

There's not a lot of cross traffic (most of which hugs those four arteries described above), and except for the din of the Franconia Road traffic, it is a relatively quiet place.

Thomas Edison High School sits at the northeast corner, and a post office with some of the friendliest staff bounds the northeast.  There's also the Greendale Golf course and Washington Golf's driving range (where you can drink beer while you wack balls off into any direction claiming that's where you were aiming).

To the geographically challenged in Del Ray and Old Town, no, Guilford is NOT Springfield :-)

Many Guilford residents cross Van Dorn from time to time to see movies at Kingstown's strip mall, or visit Alex, the bartender at the King Street Blues.
