Identify This Red Billed Hummingbird

Red bill on this hummingbird is distinctive.

Ocotillo flowers feed the migrating hummingbirds in Madera CanyonAfter the rain yesterday, today was just perfect for a picnic.  My Darlin' and I headed south to Madera Canyon.  Just east of the town of Green Valley, AZ, it's part of the Coronado National Forest, and a haven for all sorts of birds, and especially hummingbirds.  Right now the red flames (right) on the end of our desert ocotillos provide food for hummers migrating north.

There is a beautiful little gift shop halfway up the canyon, and that's where I captured a photo of this little hummingbird.

Will someone please identify him?

I like the way the Hummingbird is right in the middle of the top of the bird feeder.

According to a book I have, it is a Broad-billed Hummingbird.  Interestingly enough, the photo in the book is taken at Madera Canyon!

I agree with Doreen. The ruby throated is the only one we get in our area. They are here early this year...

Avg size: 3 1/4 - 4 inches.

"The adult male has a glittering blue-green throat, green breast and upper parts, white underparts and a forked blue-black tail.  Greenish back.  Its bill is red with a dusky tip."

It doesn't say this, but the photo shows the underside and part of the top of the wings to be a purple color.

Okay!  Good morning, and thanks for the ID.

Tom,

Have you been reading Doreen's comments?  LOL

Doreen,

Thanks for the ID, the link & the education!

Michael,

I never understood why the entire eastern part of the US got short-changed when it comes to hummingbirds.  What is it about the climate / food source that keeps the rest of the species away?

Vegas Bob,

THANKS for the feature!!

Carolin,

We also saw a Gila Monster.  Fodder for another post on my weblog.

Jane,

So THAT's his name!  LOL

David,

Me too!  Thanks for stopping by to comment.

Tim,

It's one magnificent little jewel; that's for sure.

Hi Mike - My parents used to have a couple of feeders at their house. Sometimes the hummingbirds would even explore the sun room a little while they filled up. Is that the moon in pic 2?

I don't see too many hummingbirds in my parts but that's a nifty shot you got there, Mike.

Jane cracks me up!  They fly too fast for me to even notice there's a difference.  Sure is a good shot though!  And the Moon through the thistle, nice!!

Carla,

I've been meaning to ask Jane who Fred really is...

Dagny,

They're coming...

Teral,

Put out a feeder, and they'll show up like magic!

John,

That is last night's moon.  I had my camera on the macro setting.  Oops!

Larry,

We do love 'em!

Mike - once again you have captured what most of us could not do - hummingbirds are so difficult to photograph because they move so quickly - I have gotten a couple of photos but none as good as this one!
