Charity

Do you have one Charity that you give most to?  Monetarily and Time?  I'm looking for my niche... here are some of the ones I'm considering....

lemonadeAlex's Lemonade Stand . Alex was a young girl who fought cancer by organizing Lemonade Stands. She wanted to help find a cure for cancer, to both fight for her life, and save other children from the battle.  She passed away in 2004, and her parents have continued her cause, people organize Lemonade Stands around the country and donate to Alex's Lemonade Stand.

Delaware Valley Alzheimer's Association My grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimers a few years ago. Thankfully, it has been slow progression, in my opinion.  She is living in an Assisted Living place, but she still knows us!

Children's Miracle Network RE/MAX has done a great job with promoting this charity and has a lot of materials and direction already.

Center for Hearing and Deafness a local organization helping people with financial issues obtain hearing helps.  I've begun my lifelong dream of learning ASL (American Sign Language) - I have a long way to become fluent :)

Veterans / Military ... As an Air Force brat, I was raised around the military lives, I would select an organization to help with Vets and/or their spouses. RE/MAX has also begun Sentinals of Freedom to help veterans.

I have given to fundraisers here and there (Katrina, Red Cross, etc), but I'd like to devote more of my time and money into one, then also supporting others as I can.  Disclaimer: This does not include my Religious beliefs/giving.

Do you have a Favorite one? Do you contribute to many?   How did you decide?   The TIME sense is the hardest for me....

I love the lemonade stand charity.  I had never heard of it before and sounds like fun as well as exciting.  Maybe you can have a stand in front of an open house for more traffic and a better fund raiser for the charity.

I donate time to a local German Shepherd rescue and money to a Blind Childrens Center.

A few we give to...Cadence International which ministers to our troops overseas, provides hospitality houses for them to have a place to commune with Christians, etc.  Also local things like Denver Rescue Mission, which is trying to alleviate poverty by providing meals, job training for the homeless, etc.

It's good that you are thinking about which one YOU want to support.  When you choose because you WANT to support it, it will be a better experience and you will be blessed in being involved in it.

Hi Kim,

I like to give to a cause that has somehow touched me or my family...Therefore, my top choice is The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation since I have type 1 diabetes. This is a great choice because diabetes touches so many of us. JDRF is committed to finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. There is also the American Diabetes Association which is dedicated to research and quality of life for people living with diabetes. There are many ways to be involved - as it is so important for people with diabetes to exercise and be fit both organizations have walking and biking events you could be a part of. They also have all kinds of ideas for fund-raisers depending on your interests.

Another area of interest for me is animals...Cats and/or dogs. Since I have two small dogs and just recently (7/27/07) I had to put my dear friend, Kiki (aka Biggins) to sleep due to lung cancer...he is so sorely missed. Animals bring so much joy to their families that whenever I can donate to a local shelter or cause for animals I do...I plan on making a donation in Kiki's name...for nearly 13 years he was a sweet friend, always there when I needed a "kitty" hug.... Here he is....

I don't think it matters what you do to give back - it's that you give back!  I love a lot of the smaller organizations because virtually all that you give goes to help people and not to overhead.

Joe - Great idea to raise a coupla bucks for Alex's at Open Houses.  I'm sure it would get the support here as well, local people are very aware.

Marcus- You are so right. I just felt like I should "streamline" more, but it sounds like supporting a few works for people. I should just listen to my heart more :)

I think I've heard of Cadance before, Jeff. Wouldn't it be nice just to have a 'supply' that you could dish out to ALL of the different organizations you'd like to support!

Alexander- I'll look for your post!  Glad you are supporting your community too!

DJ- Yes, I've been there. RE/MAX does a great job helping us with Children's Miracle Network giving!

Thank you, Judi!

Rebecca I'm so sorry to hear about Kiki, what a cutie! It is SO hard to say goodbye to our four-legged loved ones, I'm sorry that you had to go through that. I'm sure you still sit and wish for him to come join you on your lap :( I did participate in some JDRF fundraising - I had Gestational Diabetes and I'm at risk.  The walk was fun!

Patricia- Overhead, such a concern when you give to any charity.  I know its a neccessity, but often abused! Yes, important to give back TIME -and- MONEY.

Hugh - I'm constantly reminded just to listen to my heart :)  Thanks!

Funny you should ask!!  I am walking 60 miles in November for the Breast Cancer 3Day walk.  This will be my 2nd walk and what an adventure it is.  I am holding a Silent Auction this weekend.  I held one last year and raised over $1600 for the cause.  I organized everything myself.  It was so much work, time consuming, and running around after all the donated items was hard!!  It was SO worth it and what an accomplishment!!  I have done the same this year and I have quite a few people looking forward to it.  The food has all been donated, I have wonderful items to auction off, and I am so proud of myself for doing this!!  I lost my Mom to breast cancer, lung cancer... you name it, I think Mom had it.  She was 58 and I do this in memory of her!!

I donate to many charities.  I would say too many, but I don't know if you can ever donate too much .  I try to donate both my money and time where possible.  I was going to list them all, but I think I have enough to write a post!!
