Weekly Inspiration - Faith, Where do you run?

This week’s ‘inspiration’ was created a bit differently than usual. Typically, I get up on Friday, write the inspiration and send it to Joey for him to read. Then we discuss its message on camera.

Last week, as we were getting into place in front of the camera I asked Joey how he was doing. He wasn’t quite his bubbly self and I said “no really, how are you doing”. Joey honored me by sharing what was happening in his life, and the message was much more profound than what I had written. The video attached at the bottom is the result of that conversation.

Joey shared with me two, very difficult situations that are going on in his life. One of Joey’s very close friends is in the hospital with cancer. His friend, Dennis, is handling his situation with grace, love and faith. And while his approach to the situation does make it ‘easier’ on those around him, it’s still overwhelming emotionally. The other situation is a personal family matter that he asked I not share. But what I will say is that the situation is no less of an emotional drain.

So the question that comes up so naturally for all of us when we’re going through such things is WHY… We hear that everything happens for a reason, but when such devastating situations come our way it’s very difficult to see the reason while we’re in it.

I truly believe that everything does happen for a reason. I also believe that the more intense the situation, the more time is typically needed to pass before we recognize the lesson or the path that the situation lead us on. If we can truly believe this concept, it may help getting through situations a bit more manageable.

But there’s a bigger question here. When you are faced with seemingly insurmountable odds or a heart wrenching situation, do you find yourself turning away from your faith or embracing it with both hands and holding on for dear life? It’s a question that can be answered fairly quickly when things are going well in our life. But when you’re in the throws of a major struggle, it’s often much more difficult to embrace our faith and forge ahead.

I know when my mom passed away, I went through several years of ‘why me’? When my mother passed away in 2000, I was left without a family. Being an only child and not knowing my father, meant that when my mom left this world, so did my only family tie. I’m still reminded of this every holiday season when the songs and shows and even commercials remind us that if you don’t have family, you don’t have anything.A tough message to hear year after year.

Whether my mother’s passing was the catalyst or not, I have most definitely become much more spiritual in recent years and am trusting that everything is in divine order. It has definitely changed the course of my life and who I am today, and I am grateful for that.

If you have a couple minutes, I encourage you to watch the video to see our conversation where Joey shares in his own words, what’s happening in his life. And then I invite you to ask yourself; when times get really tough, which way do you turn?
