Trenton's Happiest Couple

By

Every year at this time the swans return to their little pond off of a side-road in Trenton.  The pond isn't very big, nor is it particularly clean and I often wonder why this beautiful couple choose to return here every year. It would seem to me that there would be hundreds of better places within a few minutes of here, yet for them, this is their spring and summer home.

This will be the third or fourth year that I have noticed them (I'll admit, I'm not the most observant fellow, so it's possible that they have been coming here for longer). Every year I notice that the female will sit on her nest for a long time, but I have yet to see any signets. Perhaps the poor couple are unable to produce viable offspring. The male seems very attentive and is never very far away. He's usually swimming around the pond (perhaps she's got him doing some chores while she's egg-sitting).

Did you know that a female swan is called a "pen", while a male swan is called a "cob"?

For some reason it just seems to me that they are a very happy couple, they are proud of their little pond and they are just delighted to be close to one-another. I'm hoping that this year there may be an addition to their little family. I bet that they would make great parents.

hi Malcolm,

What a delightful post! You certainly are very observant....

I love reading these little stories about communities and things that make them unique and special.

It's sad that they aren't able to reproduce...perhaps the pond is polluted?

btw, you have a way with words.

Jo

Malcolm,

I was in Trenton in 1958-59. Air Force brat. I can't remember much about it except the base.

Malcolm,

Very interesting, and I had not heard the terms pens and cobs. You learn something new every day!

Hi Malcolm!  Have you ever seen a black swan?  I didn't know there was such a thing until I saw some in person.

Jo-Anne Smith- Oakville, Burlington and Mississauga Region Real Estate, Ont (Brekland Realty Group) Hi Jo, I also like reading about quirky things that make communities special. This is why AR is so great.

Janice Ankrett ASP (Janice Ankrett Home Staging) Janice, if this is the case, then I'm afraid they didn't save very much monet for their retirement. It's not a nice neighbourhod.

Terry Chenier (Homelife Glenayre Realty) Hi Terry, the airforce base is a huge part of Trenton, and it's getting even bigger with the new expansion taking place.

Brian Madigan LL.B. (Royal LePage Innovators Realty, Broker) Brian, indeed I do learn something every day. That's usually why I read your blog.

Ann Allen ~ SRES ASP e-PRO REALTOR® ~ Birmingham Alabama Luxury Homes (Keller Williams Realty) Ann, it's so strange you should mention that. I just finished reading a book called The Black Swan by Nassim Taleb. Based on the book, there is now a Black Swan Theory. Black swans were unheard of until they were discovered in Australia in the 18th century. Until then the assumption was that they were always white.

Malcolm Johnston (Remax Trent Valley, Trenton, Ontario):  This is a cute piece.  I came here since you referenced it in another (later) post:  Trenton's Happiest Couple (Redux).

It's almost like this blog piece was a formal prediction of what's to come.
