Want to bring your dog to great trails that are known to be "off leash open space" in Marin County, CA? Tired of the enclosed dog parks and want to take advantage of off leash fire trails and beaches that welcome your furry friends?!?!
I have 2 dogs. Foxy Brown and Lily White. Foxy Brown is a chocolate lab/pit mix that is sweet, kind, independent and all about her tennis ball. She's also one of those dogs that you can run off the peir with and dive into the water! I got her from the San Francisco SPCA about 8 years ago. She's a bit old now but still needs her exercise and likes to run free from time to time.
Lily White is a dog that I adopted 4 years ago from Smiley Dog a local Bay Area rescue organization. Lily was supposed to be Jack Russell mix but what I got was NO Jack Russell. Instead Lily is a giant border collier or herding mix. She's constantly circling you when you walk anywhere and will nip at the ankles of Foxy Brown to move her into action. Lily is also a fast runner which means "off leash open space"!
But in Marin County, CA "off leash open space" areas for your dogs can be a needle in a haystack.
But after scouring the area I found a few good spots to recommend. First, if you're in Mill Valley, CA and you want to find a spot where dogs are allowed without their leash on you might want to cruise on over to Escalon Trail. It's just off of Camino Alto. 1 block past Kite Hill.
Escalon Trail, Mill Valley CA for off leash open trail walks with your dogs is a sweet spot and an even sweeter find!
Escalon's open space is not only for off leash dogs. It is also shared with bikers and runners alike so you must have your dogs under voice control (that's at least what the sign says.) AND don't forget to bring your poop bags. Its very civilized here!
Next on the list of great off leash open spaces for dogs in Marin County is Limantaur Beach at Point Reyes. Limantaur Beach is rated as one of the Top 7 Beaches in Marin County, CA and has a beach location that is off leash for you and your dogs that like to swim and run along the beach. Foxy and Lily (see pic below) LOVE it at Limantaur Beach in Marin County. Usually I pack up the truck with dogs and kid, take the chucker, beach towels, water bowls, sunscreen and picnic basket. It can take about a half an hour to get there and the directions are really easy. If you are in Greenbrae, CA you go West on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard until you hit Highway 1, you make a right on Highway 1 a left on Bear Valley Road and then left on Limantour...follow that until you see the beach. Parking on the left of the beach is for dog lovers. Park in the lot and take the long sandy path to the left. You are going to love it here so plan on staying for quite a while.

Other dogs spots that are off leash and in an open space, not enclosed dog runs, is Crown Road in Kentfield, CA. Muir Beach has always been dog friendly where they can leash free run along Stinson Beach once you go north of the State Beach area.
If you have dogs big or small that like to run free whether on the beach or a fire trail and you are relocating to Marin County let me know how I can help you and your furry friends find even more off leash open spaces for your dogs to run free in Marin, CA!
