Restful living the South County Swamp Yankee RI way may be foreign to 'outsiders' not aware of the Rhode Island formula of local expressions. The South County Swamp Yankee is usually a descendant of local lore & genuine history and I can truthfully say that swampers are a pleasure to know. Now 'South County RI' is a term used for the southern locales in this tiny RI state, i.e. Charlestown, South Kingstown, Narragansett, Exeter, etc. towns.
The individuals who are beholden to the swamp yankee terminology are dwindling out as they pass from this life but they leave a great storytelling legacy. One of my favorite people was a 'swamper' named Bud Browning in South Kingstown. I got to know him when I was going to college and he owned hundreds of acres south of Rte.1 in South Kingstown RI. Somehow I got involved with establishing a garden one summer with his mother in her backyard- the mother of all swampers & even in her 80's she was a trip. To her rocks just 'grew' out of the ground because last year she had picked them from her garden beds but the next year a new crop of rocks appeared! Never a dull moment with the pet crow on the porch pecking at you either. And if I thought I could escape without having a piece of her mincemeat pie, no way that would happen. Oh, I couldn't stand the taste of that pie...but she showed me the resilience of what a south county swamp yankee was all about & especially as a woman. Noone messed with her or her son Bud. Both have passed on but the trueness of their being I can certainly reflect on as this is really a wordless Wednesday. To the restful living of the South County Swamp Yankee the RI Way!
