Wordless Wednesday:Jalopy in the Woods

Old Jalopy in the Woods

When hiking along the trails in some of our steep canyons, one occasionally rounds the bend and comes across a remnant of the past that makes you pause and reflect for a moment. This old car is right off the Peter's Loop Trail in Portola Redwoods State Park in San Mateo County. So close to the urban areas of the Peninsula like Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Redwood City, yet eons away in feel.

Kinda a scary thought, Robert -- maybe it was jettisoned and just shoved into the canyon? I hate to think of the alternative.

Lottie, this is not an easy match considering the condition.  My guess is that it's a 1937 or '38 Chrysler Royal.

Nice Pic. Looks like a 1939 Hudson, but I'm not sure because of the grille.

Wow: the things that are hiding in the woods! I wonder how long it's been there and how many critters have adopted it as "home." ;-)

Lottie, I think this would make for a great special interest story!!  Send this blog to your local newspaper journalist and see if they will pick up the mystery?  Maybe giving you a nod in the story as well??

Lottie, what a great title!  I haven't heard nor seen the word jalopy used since the last Hardy Boys book I read.  That is too bad, it is a great word!  Great photo!  and thanks for using the word jalopy!

Hi Kevin and David -- thanks for weighing in with your ID for the car -- my husband will like hearing your thoughts. He pegged the era the same as you did.

Cari, I wonder the same thing. I do know the bashed in roof made a great planter box for grasses and other plant life!

Andi -- you have a FABULOUS idea! I think I'll run with it.

Tony and Darcy, I'm chuckling to think you like the word 'jalopy' so much. It just popped into my head when I saw the car--seemed to fit perfectly. I used to love the Hardy Boy books; they had such grand adventures!

I know what you mean, Debra. Don't you wonder how the car ended up in the ravine?

Yes it is always fascinating to wonder exactly what transpired with something like that.
