Maintenance Tip #2: Door weatherstripping
The cold is coming and now is the time to make sure it's kept outside. Some of the major areas of heat loss during the fall and winter is through weatherstripping. Weatherstripping dries out, cracks, and seperates over time and if not inspected will let out a significant amont of heat.
There are many ways to check your household weatherstipping around doors. One way is to stay on the inside of the door and get someone else to use a flashlight and shine it around the edges of the jam. It of course needs to be in the evening to be able to see the light coming through but is quite effective. Another way is use a lit candle and hold it all long the edges of the inside of the door jam. Now please don't have this lit candle near any flamable material, such as curtains, this could cause a fire and be very dangerous. I do think that any adult can do this safely as long as there careful. The nice thing about using a candle is that every house has one and the flame is very sensitive to the smallest amount of air movement. This way you can pinpoint exactly where the cold is coming in and the heat escaping. Once you have determined where the problem is, you just need to replace the old weatherstripping in that particular area and your done.
