can they really stage?

Home Stager with Simply Irresistible Interiors

Frequently I am asked to hire aspiring stagers who want to "decorate!" as they put it. I must get 5-10 emails a month. I go through a series of questions, usually none of which are answered to my satisfaction.

However, I have learned over the last 7 years that everyone deserves a chance and that you either "got it" or you don't. Any person can take a staging course in this world and even that will not help you if you don't "have it" so to speak. Natural ability and the "eye" that it takes to put a room together cannot be learned in a class. May I repeat.... CANNOT be learned in a class.

I am finding it about a 1 in 30 success rate. Seriously. I bring on new "stagers" for a training day, ready willing and able to go, they show up and talk the talk and then there is no ability to put the room together.

This is a serious business that honestly requires spectacular people who are gifted at Staging, who perform superior to their counterparts, who run the full race even till late hours, who are tireless in ideas, who will jump in their car at 8:45 pm to make it 22 miles to Home Sense for the "perfect thing" rather than compromise a project outcome out of sheer laziness.....these "stagers have it in their BLOOD. They never quit, need no direction other than how to get to the house - and even then they are able to read maps and figure it out- they are the stars of this industry, the real deal. And hiring these Stagers will make your property sell. Hiring the "others" who do not fit the bill are going to cost you money.

As a Business Owner, I feel overwhelmed at times with the amount of people who call themselves stagers and in fact do damage to this fabulous industry.

That is my soap box for the day....take from it what you will.

Must be the day for soap boxes; I said mine already and I agree with you on yours, Jill.

The issue of people claiming to be capable of performing a task and can not holds true in other industries as well - like retail. People wanted to come into visuals (the display department) because they thought it would be "fun & easy"... Fun? Can be at times... Easy? If you do what you love, than yes, it is easy... but when I would ask, Can you lift 40lbs. OR MORE, I'd get the dear in the headlights look (which would mean they weren't going to exert the energy required for a floor set). I'd ask if they were "ok" on a ladder, and I'd still get the same look or a flat out, "But I'm afraid of heights." (are you joking?)

Although I have yet to set a staging for a client (other than our condo I set, staged, photographed AND sold or all the makeovers I've done for our home and for my mom), I do believe I do have what it takes to be a stager. I managed a budget, planned and physically set floor moves in a 195,000 sq. ft. store for sixteen years, resulting in increasing the sales from 30mill to 50 mill... I can do a house or a condo...

My issue is having the chance TO do so... which I'm glad to have read from your post you DO give people a chance. Maybe to save some time, request they have photos they are able to explain their thought process, and if not - buh-bye.

There's my soapbox for the night.... ;-) Thanks.

Great idea on the photos beforehand.....they could simply do a room or two in their own house to provide that to me.....thanks!

How the heck is the staging business going.  I see you have not been very active here on activerain lately.  Hope things are still going well in Edmonton.

Jill, I just went through one of your points the other day! I was on the way to a stage and had texted my assistant about the number of pillows only to find out they hadn't been delivered. So I whipped over to a store and picked some up. You can't have a bed with no pillows, I'm not sure what he expected me to do, stuff them with newspaper? I have been giving this person chances, but I don't think he 'gets it'...
