TIP:  Best way to use technology to make international calls to your client.

Scenario: It is 12PM on Sunday.  You are getting ready for an open house scheduled from 2PM to 4PM.  The buyer’s agent calls you at 12:30PM and says the inspector cannot get into the electrical box because it has a padlock.  Your seller is in Israel, 8 hours away.

What’s the best way to handle this situatiion?

  • Contact locksmith if you have one in your business network – He was 2 hours away.
  • Contact nearest relative – left message .. they are not available.
  • Go to Home Depot and buy yourself a wire cutter and rush over there.

What do you do to make international call to your client?  How do you make it in time for your open house and get the key to the inspector who is waiting with the buyer to complete the home inspection?

Here’s one possible solution.  Make a call using your smartphone with Skype using a mobile hotspot.

  • After getting prepared for the open house, I got in my car and placed my mobile hotspot in the passenger seat.
  • On my smartphone (iPhone) with ear buds for driving safety, I opened the Skype application on my smartphone (iPhone) and dialed my client in Israel.
  • The connection went from my smartphone(iPhone) connected wirelessly to the mobile hotspot to his phone in Israel.
  • Seller said the keys where in a drawer in the kitchen.Made a regular smartphone cellphone call to the inspector.Problem solved in 15 minutes.
  • I made it to the open house with 15 minutes complete with setup of 5 directions signs and balloons to spare.

Skype (www.skype.com): software free, international call via Skype < $0.50

Allows you to make computer to computer (free) or computer to phone calls (local/international) at inexpensive rates.  [By the way, if you have a webcam, you can see your client if they also have a skype account.  Pretty cool.]

Mobile hotspot: about $50-60/month

Sprint (www.sprint.com) has a mobile hotspot offering.  This allows me to work remotely away from my home office anytime, anywhere.  By the way, the mobile hot spot has the ability to connect up to 5 new users.  So I can make new friends and be of service to others.
