As Cobb County, Georgia continues to grow, public projects designed to meet the needs of the community are being carried out.

A project to provide traffic congestion relief in Town Center area Cobb dignitaries recently held a ground breaking ceremony for the Big Shanty expansion project, a two-mile roadway designed to provide significant congestion relief for the northwest part of the county. Cobb is partnering with the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Town Center Area Community Improvement District. When completed, the project will provide an alternative to the congested Chastain Road and Barrett Parkway corridors. Keeping the needs of pedestrians and bikers in mind, Big Shanty improvements will also include a multi-use trail on the entire length of the project, providing a safe transit environment for employees, Kennesaw State University students and visitors to the Town Center area.

This $26.2 million project is divided into three phases. Phase one is under construction and focuses on a new roadway extending Big Shanty under Interstate 75 west of Busbee Parkway to Barrett Lakes Boulevard. Phase two will begin in mid-2010 and center on the creation of a new roadway from Barrett Lakes Boulevard to Town Point Drive and further widening of the road to Chastain Road. Phase three is under construction and targets widen the section of Busbee Parkway to Chastain Meadows Parkway.
