Its impossible these days to drive through historic Madison, Georgia, or around the beautiful Morgan County countryside without noticing all the signs
The re-zoning application that will allow a proposed Regional Landfill is working its way through the review process. Buyers thinking of moving here are asking questions, of course, and this gives me a chance to discuss with them what I love most about living in Morgan County:
PEOPLE CARE. CITIZENS GET INVOLVED. AS A RESULT, MOST DECISIONS GET MADE BASED ON LONG TERM GOOD.
When the first public hearing was re-rescheduled, my friend Meg decided that "we, the people" should gather anyway. So with the help of a few friends, and with just one week's notice - more than 150 citizens gathered in our new Town Park to learn more about the proposal and to let their voices be heard.
People here like to gather facts and make up their own minds about things, so we had representatives from the Citizens to Preserve Morgan County (www.ctpmc.org) and the Madison-Morgan Conservancy (www.mmcgeorgia.org) available to share their research and answer questions.
Keep Morgan Green was also on hand, to promote recycling and compost efforts - because reducing our solid waste is a commitment we all can make.
Loud cheers followed the announcement that the Northeast Georgia Regional Commissions DRI committee had just decided that the project is not in the best interest of the region, joining the Madison City Council and the Madison-Morgan Conservancy in advising the commissioners to vote no on the re-zoning application.
The Planning Commission is tentatively scheduled to hold a public hearing on June 10. Stay tuned to democracy in action, here in beautiful Madison, Georgia.
