Discipline....The Most Important Component

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with RE/MAX Executive Realty - Happily Retired 104763

If I were to name one component that is required for success in the real estate business, my thought would be discipline.  Discipline is self control.  It's the difference between agents who know they have to make follow up calls before the end of the day and those who make them the next morning instead.  Discipline is what makes one agent blog every day and another twice a week.  A disciplined real estate agent will succeed in spite of a declining market or any negative force.

Following a strict routine of daily real estate tasks is an exercise in discipline that will result in production.  Creating a game plan for the year and breaking it down to monthly, weekly and daily habits to follow will result in new business being captured.  Creating an elaborate plan of attack will not accomplish anything unless you carry out the plan.  Good intentions don't count.  Good intentions don't pay the bills.

Unless you are literally being fed business, discipline is the key to success.  Taking the first step is nothing more than "taking the first step."  Having the willpower to follow through routinely with your plan is imperative, if you expect to achieve.

Barbara, all things I learned from the nuns at Catholic school.  Hated it then, but those values sure came in handy in life.  Great advice, per usual.

Barbara, Very well said. Discipline, self control and the talent to be a self starter are the keys to any job, but especially outside sales. I also agree that goals and planning are important in any business. It blows my mind how little time and resources this industry in general puts into training for these vital things. As a new agent with little or no training, I have struggled with the planning and goals component.

Tom....you should be starting with one small goal at a time....get one listing and from that listing, market the living life out of it and draw as many buyers as possible for that and/or other properties.....one listing and two sales is a reasonable goal for starters.....then increase the number of listings....this is a listings game....if you have listings, you'll always have income....you will always have buyers....and you will easily list other properties because you have that one listing.

HI THERE BARBARA!  It is so nice to be able to get back on AR and read and comment!  I learned this lesson early on in life from my military dad.  As much as it frustrated me back then .. his words always stuck with me "One day, you will appreciate what I am teaching you and it will pay off."  So far, it has with everything I've done!  Nice post to read today! -- Gab

Hi Gabrielle....nice to hear from you again....your father did you a great justice by teaching you how to be disciplined.....it's a difficult lesson to learn and a more difficult one to teach....have  nice evening, Gab.

Lately I'm thinking that discipline also means brooming buyers that like to make offers, but don't seem to like buying houses...Anybody want a referral? (He asks, only somewhat jokingly...)

Ray.....that's why I always preferred listings to working with buyers!!!  I had the product and I let all the agents do the running around to sell it.

Blogging and working on my website are the only 2 things I do consistently. Because of it, I get business from it. It's one thing I keep doing day after day. Nothing I've started that I have been able to attest to that.

and if you add direct mail once a month, that too will work well....pick a subdivision that has good turn over....market to it every month....it's not time consuming....does your mls offer public record information??
