Nose to nose with a meerkat....

Chula Vista Nature Center, Chula Vista, CaliforniaI had a great time at the San Diego Zoo yesterday with some friends of mine.

While they oohed and aahed at all the wildlife and pretty flowers, I was testing our new 2x extender for our Canon Rebel XSi.

The meerkats are always a great source of great entertainment — lots of oohing, aahing — scurrying about, digging in the soil, and sitting up on their hind legs to see who's watching them.

The new 2x extender allows us to get really up close to them, nose to nose you might say:

Nose to nose with a meerkat at the San Diego Zoo

After I got home and looked at that picture, I really wanted to get some Kleenex and wipe the poor little fellow's nose for him.

Always enjoy your photos.....I'm wondering if you ever finished the 'Then and Now' shoot of the train running along the coast.  I probably missed it during the proxy error debacle, but i would love to see it.

Have a great day!

He is absolutely adorable. We went to our local zoo and I got some shots of the prairie dogs but nothing as good as yours.

Hey, Michael - I was about ten feet. There's a large wall around the meerkat exhibit that prevents use from getting too close, but that doesn't bother me now.

Hey, Scott - I did finish it, just two days ago as a matter of fact. It's titled Then and now.... (part 2), and you can find it over here:  http://activerain.com/blogsview/1631409/then-and-now-part-2-

Hey, Peggy - You really can't go wrong with any of the major brands of cameras. However, you will find that Canon is less expensive than Nikon. It's been that way since around 1973 when Paul Simon made it to #1 on the Billboard charts with Kodachrome and his Nikon camera. That was great publicity for Nikon and Kodak, the type of publicity that you just can't pay for, and every time they play the song 37 years later, it has the same effect. If you're not experienced with digital SLRs, I'd recommend something like the Rebel XS or XSi to get started. Then spend any spare money you have on lenses so that you have a wide variety to work with in real estate -- wide angle, standard, zoom, etc.

Russel,

The close-up feature (optical zoom capability) is one of the things I value the most in a camera.   As you probably now, I love to take photos of wildlife in Montana and it comes in very handy.    Great nose to nose encounter!  I agree that a kleenex would also have come in handy in this case.
