Lakeville ISD 194 in Lakeville, MN continued its reputation for excellence with a "Mock Crash" demonstration sponsored by Students Against Destructive Decisions.
This past Tuesday morning at Lakeville North High School, the group presented the annual "mock crash" for 11th and 12th grade students, in coordination with the Lakeville Police and Fire Departments.
These presentations alternate between the Lakeville North and Lakeville South High Schools to ensure that every Lakeville high school student can personally witness one of the dramatic reenactments of a fatal car crash involving teenage drivers and passengers.
The students were visibly moved by the experience, according to the Lakeville Police Cheif Tom Vonhof. Officer Rick Bussler and LFD Firefighter Taber Akin narrated. It is an incredibly realistic re-enactment involving police, fire, and Allina paramedic response teams, using real vehicles with students acting as injured and killed drivers and passengers.
The presentation ended with the personal story of Nathan and Connie Backstrom, the parents of three brothers that were killed in a car crash caused by a drunk driver who was on his cell phone, only a few years ago just east of Farmington.
The hope is that the mock crash will help our kids make good decisions about not using alcohol and drugs, using their seatbelts, avoiding distracted driving by texting or talking on cell phones, and not speeding.
The message that they walk away with is that bad choices in any one of these areas can have potentially tragic consequences.
