Am I a Stager, or a Consultant?

Home Stager with Owner, The Refreshed Home White Plains NY

What a great question!  It was posed to me recently by a prospective client, and I've been intrigued by it since. Short answer-yes...and yes!

For many people, what they know of Staging is what they see on TV-empty trophy homes, lots of drama from the mother and daughter team, or budget-driven quick fixes that after the first ahhhh are really more like Shop or Home Ec projects (but hey, they kept it under budget!!).

Combine that with each homeowners' unique needs and circumstances, then  it's no wonder many  perceive Staging to be this big mysterious process-impossible to define, and ok, let's be honest, probably very expensive too-right? I knew this prospective client was nervous about this, didn't want to find themselves in too deep,  or know how else to ask....

Staging is many things-it is creative,  flexible, and highly individualized; but it's also a conscious business decision, and  most importantly, it is a means to an end. It is also never the same experience for any two people.

When I first meet with  a prospective client, to get an accurate read on their needs and expectations, I ask a lot of questions...people looking for a quick price quote are invariably disappointed,  sure they are being led straight towards the Hard Sell Zone.

In an occupied property, Stagers will typically always work with what a client already has, but I believe Staging has to sometimes look beyond what's in the attic. There are neighbors with lamps that could be borrowed, local barter systems where you can  trade your talents to get the living room painted, and places that would oh so gratefully accept many things you have no use for but can't seem to toss out either.

End point being titles do not indicate cost, or value. Let's have that conversation, bring lots of questions and an open mind, you may just be very pleasantly surprised.

Marie, I just decided to go in search of your first post and from what I read here you're a natural.  My fist post was a real dud...it felt clumsey and not at all natural, but you just jumped in like you were made for writing and informing the people you want to reach.

Hey, Marie. I left a surprise for you in my blog post this morning. Let me know when you find it. What? You thought I was going to tell you exactly where it is? Ha! This comment is a clue, though.

Happy Saturday!

Home staging is confusing for many...it's important for sellers to understand that each job is different and it's not necessarily an expensive service.  I consider myself a "consultant" most of the time...I mostly advise and the sellers usually do most of the work.

At times you play both roles, You consult on how they can sell their home and help stage it. Any other questions are basically consultation. Great Post.

Hi Marie,

I love your writing style. I also agree that letting ourselves be defined by our titles is a bit overblown. I'm sure you're good at what you do from what I can tell.

Stop by...:)

Love and light,

Laura

THAT RUSSEL! How nice and kind is that, to dig back and shine his sporlight my way-thank you!

Hi Sharon-first, thanks for stopping by; second-you are right! People (sellers AND agents) just need to start the conversation, where there's a will, there's a way.

Ben-appreciate your commenting. The lines blur, and scope of the job often changes, but it's really all the same, it was how this client (actually a husband and wife team of REALTORS) needed to put it into a perspective that worked for them.

Thank you on all counts, Laura! Overblown is a good way to look at it, but for many having a title, or definition helps de-mystify things and keep the conversation going.
