It's Strawberry Picking Time

One of the wonderful things about Hampton Roads is the farms that bring us fresh food.  5 minutes from my office in the middle of suburbia, you can go pick strawberries.  These strawberries are so sweet and juicy they burst with flavor in your month - nothing like what you would buy in a grocery store.  Besides having some great strawberries, it's a great activity for kids.

Strawberry picking in CHesapeake, VA

There are lots of strawberry patches located through out Hampton Roads.  Here are a few to visit  around Chesapeake:

Lilley Farms - 2800 Tyre Neck Road, Chesapeake, VA 23321. Phone: 757-483-9880
Lilley Farms also runs a location off of Bennett's Pasture Rd in Suffolk.

Brookdale Farms - 2133 Mount Pleasant Road, Chesapeake, VA  Phone: 757-721-0558

It has also become quite an area tradition to go to the Pungo Strawberry Festival Memorial Day weekend.  They expect to have over 100,000 visitors to the event that is all about strawberries.  You can visit their website for picking locations in the Pungo, Virginia Beach area.

Rosalind.....may this be the first of many features for you. As far as the strawberry's go, I have been experimenting lately with making fruit pies. It is so easy to do and rewarding in the end (big time). Pre-made Graham cracker-ed crusts are available at the market. I usually buy a small jar of jelly, mix that with tapioca, some lemon, little cinnamon, nuts are optional and OUILA......a fruit pie that can substitute for a meal. Takes minutes too....Your post got me for the good.....thank you

Beautiful photos!  I had fresh strawberries on my oatmeal this morning, but those look especially sweet and joicy.

Great addition to localism for your area.

Blueberries.  Now you're talking about my favorite fruit.  I can hardly wait to buy them fresh in the grocery store.  In fact, I purchased 4 two lb. bags of frozen today.  However, I surely prefer the fresh.  That said, I'm not going to pay $4.99 for about 4 oz.  Those 2 lb. bags of frozen were $7.95 per bag.

I love picking strawberries as do both of my children.  We went last year and ate directly from the fields until we were stuffed.
