Ta-Daaaa. New Google. Good News / Bad News.

Like a cat that creeped up on the unsuspecting bird... Google is here. The new one. It arrived last night. And I never saw it coming.

Did ya miss it? There's a new AdWords back end, now too.

The Google logo is sort of new, too. But wait until you see SEARCH. A lot of you might get peeved. Cuz now it's a lot easier for your leads to look at other competitor sites now.

Rule of Thumb: People like to click on buttons. Why? Because they can.

Go to Google right now. Type in www.Google.com into your browser. It sort of fades in. Then the top menus on the left. These fade in next.

Cool, right?  Look carefully. Even the Google LETTERS are different. No more drop shadows anymore.

So, why the new look? Because HTML 5.0 is here.  And so are a few new things you might have never heard of before.  Like jQuery and ajax (asynchronous javascript and XML)

Google's new search tools are based on HTML 5.0 and jQuery + ajax, now.

The question begging to be asked:  *IS* Google new and improved?

Answer:  It depends on who you talk to.

One of our recent clients is Greg Fox, Broker at large at Realty World Wichita.

We build and design SEO friendly websites and we just did one for Greg's firm recently. I entered in the Google search phrase:  wichita homes for sale and crossed my fingers.  ( click )

Ahhhhhh. A sigh of relief. Google didn't change the primary SEO algorithms and Greg still shows up on page one #3.

This means we don't get fired on Monday.  I can enjoy a Sunday off ( stress free

New Google

Here's the new Google Breakdown in 3 parts.

1.) The top part looks different.

It looks like a pull down, but it isn't. See the tiny Google volume? It's smaller and tucked here now instead of big and bold and on the top right where it used to be.

2.) The Google Side Bar. Good or Bad?

The side bar is where you can filter your results or refine them. This lets Google show you Real Time Search Results Pages (RTSERP). This might create a problem for your traffic.  If you are not doing your part on link building, if you are not doing very much on social media networking links... then don't cry too much if you see you are NOT listed in some of the real time results.

This is a warning to some of you who are not blogging as much as you should.  Blog more, and blog more frequently and your rankings will show up consistently when next time home buyers come looking for you.

3.) Greg's Website is still here @ page one position # 3 and holding.

The only thing I do not like 9and lots of you are going to hate too, is the (SIMILAR link).  Crap! Now your next time home buyers can click and see your competitor sites too.  I tried pasting a DISLIKE Facebook button here, but Facebook doesn't have one. They just have the LIKE buttons.

The Similar button is great if you're looking for the best place in town to get new Michelin tires for your car or SUV.

It SUCKS if you're a REALTOR. See? I click on Greg's similar blue link and I get a lot of his competitors.

Oops!

One link is Greg, the rest are other websites.  Greg's not going to like this. I expect to get his call on Monday if not tomorrow.

This means you'll all be losing some leads here if you're already on a page one natural search results page. Nothing the Bartman can do about this, one.

I went, I did a handful of seraches and I'm still happy with the results I'm getting.  My search term of choice, the one I feel MOST of my potential clients use is VERY BROAD and I'm still on page 1 for it and others.  I admit, I'm not a fan of the extra stuff on the left, but I'll get over it.

I wonder what else they have in store for us down the road? Not a fan of the current change.

I like the new logo design. Much cleaner.  I'm sure that the new graphical design was implemented after much testing and it will help Google's top line.

My click-throughs fromGoogle searches have increased quite noticeably since the Google site changed, but it's too early to tell whether it is related to the change.  It's within the statistical range of an occasional random flurry.  If it goes on for a week or more, I'd say it would be highly likely to be related.  But even if it is related, it isn't necessarily relevant, because it could be from other webmasters checking out how the new Google is working, and clicking through to some of their competitors' sites that are showing up as related links.  We've always got something to have to adapt to, don't we?

I suspect with the side bar tool it will be more important to be more diversified in the serps for all mediums.

Bart - It seems that one of your key points to stay relevant is to continuously generate fresh content so that the time filters on the left have your results to report.

I have noticed a drastic drop in adwords ads as well.  Not sure if it just the maket, or did they change some rules with that as well?

Hi Bart,

No question Google wants to rule the world.

Microsoft has been quietly sliding down hill the last few years.

And Google is bursting with energy, new ideas, new cool stuff.

Thanks for the post

Phil
