Unless you are living under a rock, or on Mars, you have heard about the law that Governor Janet Brewer signed regarding immigration.

While I do not agree with how this law is structured, I do agree our borders need to be secured from people entering without proper documentation.  As with any country you visit, you must have a passport, or some form of identification stating where you are from and how long you plan to live or stay in the country you are visiting.  Arizona should be no different, as it is a part of the United States, however the fact that it is a Border state to Mexico, it is subject to a barrage of illegal aliens.

When people smuggle themselves into foreign countries, they are breaking the laws of the country - after all smuggling does not mean in the "light of day", but instead means to sneak in,  undercover, undetected, and un-noticed.  As an African American, I am sensitive to the rights of people, I dislike discrimination of any type whether it be due to race , religion, color, national origin, or gender.  I don't like finger pointing because of what someone perceives who that person to be based upon how they look, or what their race, or color may be.   It reminds me of when the United States was at war with Japan, where Japanese American were put in concentration camps, just because of their national origin.

I am a product of the 60's where blantant discrimination was condoned and was expected.  I remember when having a job was a priviledge, and not a right.  I remember being refused employment, or being the last hired, first fired because of the color of my skin.  I also remember how long it took for us to get where WE are today, and also know how much further we need to go.   I know the law is directed to the Latino community, and understand their plight, their angry and their disgust.   I thank GOD for all the people who fought and died for my rights and I suspect the Latino community have their heroes as well.  The sad part is the people who drafted this law did not learn from past mistakes"  therefore they are destined to repeat them.  They can not round-up people  or detain people because of who they think they may be.

I don't have the solution to the problems, some of the politician who are looking to run for office declares they have the solution, and will gladly share those plans if they are elected to office.  I say why not share the solution today?  Isn't it about our security, our well being, our safety and our sanity?

Let's do the right thing while preserving the rights of people, let's not become an apartheid state, but a State of "Just and Fair treatment for All".

Cynthia-

Thank you for having the courage to speak out about this Law. I hate the idea of "racial profiling" since I  have lost family from the Holocaust. This law will not eliminate "illegals" from entering the country, but it will incite alot of hatred. Asking to produce your passport is not a big deal if you are here legally, but the way in which you are asked (being stopped in traffic if you look Latino) is the issue. I wish I had a solution.
