How to Use Scents Wisely When Staging.

So often I'm asked if homeowners should leave lingering scents of coffee, fresh baked cookies or bread for that added feeling of home.  Perhaps back before staging became an essential to selling a property as it was an unexpected surprise.  It added to the experience. But now that staging has set the stage (pun intended) for a good showing, smelling those items makes one wonder what you may be covering up.  The scents send out red flags.

Nothing works best than the fresh scent of "clean" but if you are still convinced fresh coffee, cookies or bread is the way to go then leave out items that will indicate that perhaps you just ran out the door after having baked or enjoyed a cup of coffee.

For example, place a mug with a little coffee in it and put it on the counter next to the coffee maker that has been turned off.  Leave the spoon that you may have used to stir it next to the mug.  The counter is still clean and clear but with a little hint of home.

Happy staging!

Your post makes me hungry (smile). In all seriousness, this is great advice.  Thanks for sharing.

Hi Tina ~ another easy way to get the coffee "effect" is to leave out a clean coffee mug and put some fresh coffee beans in it.  The scent will last for a long time.  (love your food photos!)

Tina, I agree, the best scent is clean.

Just as homes have "dated" issues, so does staging techniques....some of them have seen their day :o)  But, I agree, most importantly, it is the issue of "what are they hiding".....that you must avoid.

Kathy, I had to have a coffee and cookie for a snack. ;) Thanks for stopping by.

Maureen, that's a really good idea, but for me, it would still look "staged".

Janice, Mr. Clean should be everyone's hero.

Julie, I agree whole heartedly.  Keeping up to date with market expectations and giving the "wow" factor that influences decisions is paramount.

YUMO....love the graphics!  I prefer "clean" and try to place an open decorative jar with ivory soap in it if needed. :)
