Business Cards on the way out?

I was picking up breakfast at Subway yesterday morning (yes, Subway has breakfast and it is awesome!) and I watched this gentleman sitting at the table finishing his food and when got up to leave he pulled his business card out of his wallet and left it on the table as well as leaving one on top of the trash can.\

I was wondering if anyone would truly call someone from a business card that they picked up off the table?  Is the business card only good to give out when meeting people in person?  Will newer smart phones start to replace the paper business card?  What about using a metal business card like the one pictured here?

As long as people hand you something free like a business card, I think they will be around for awhile longer. It appears the person you observed has found some creative ways to use them. After all, if he/she has a web site or blog on them, the act of simply leaving a card behind could generate an inquiry or business. As for "metal business cards" - I prefer paper ones.

I will often leave my business cards at places where I am a patron. I have a unique, eye catching design and it definitely catches attention. I do know that I get people on my website from them typing in the URL. (Thanks Google analytics!) Do they come from a lone business card left on a table?

It seems like to me that anyone and everyone has a business card for whatever they are pushing at that time and people just ignore it.
