As reported in today's Peninsula News:

The Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District and the Palos Verdes Faculty Association have reached a tentative contract agreement, reducing the number of instructional days from 180 to 176 for the 2010-11 school year. The move will reduce the salaries of all PVFA employees, saving about 25 teaching positions and keeping class sizes manageable. A joint announcement was made on Tuesday.

To help reduce a $4-million deficit because of the ongoing state budget crisis, the Board of Education in March approved preliminary layoff notices for more than 59 full-time equivalent teaching positions. Of those 59, nine were rescinded to fill vacancies in the district, said William Franchini, PVPUSD's human resource director.

"We're probably going to bring back about half of the positions that were eliminated because of this agreement," he said.

If the agreement is approved,by a vote of the teachers the first teacher workday will be Monday, Aug. 30 and the first student day will be Tuesday, Aug. 31. There will be a weeklong break in February.
