Congratulations on moving! After all of the tiring hours and days of work it takes to prepare for a move emotionally and physically you need to relax and get used to your new living area! When first moving to a new spot it is normal to find things that you don’t like. Renovating your home is a huge project and often not seen as big of a task as it actually is. Here are a few guidelines to make renovating your home a success.

Maintenance Checklists

When you buy a home one of the first things you should do if you haven’t already is get a full home inspection before you moved in. This will let you know what is good with the house and what needs some work or replacing. Unless you purchased a “project home” or a “fixer upper” new home renovations are usually small, cheap tasks that aren’t usually very hard to complete. This doesn’t mean they aren’t important, small tasks left undone can easily turn into bigger tasks which come with a bigger bill so get them while they are small!

Curb Appeal

There is nothing like a first impression and this is when you first pull up to the home. Curb appeal is huge. Keep your landscaping attractive. This means your trees, shrubs, lawn and flowers. If these areas are untouched it can lead to an eye sore. Although this isn’t as important as wiring or plumbing what this does is it gives your neighbors the impression that you care about the home and property and want to help make the neighborhood look great. I find one of the best areas to note that this is a standard is walking down the streets of Boston. If you look at the Boston Apartments you can see the care that is shown by the property owners.

What is hidden?

The most important thing with home maintenance knows what is hidden behind a wall or under the floors. Things you can’t see can often are often what costs the most money but at the same time can raise the value instantly. For example if you go to sell your home down the line and you can tell people that you have all new plumbing and electrical that is a huge selling point to keep the buyers mind at ease of things they don’t have to do. Not only is a good thing for down the road it’s a good thing to keep your bills low as possible from the start.

The Interior

New homeowners usually focus on aesthetic changes that will make their home look nice on the inside. Although a fresh coat of paint and the hardwood floors you wanted will certainly make the home look nice these changes are usually best to left for last. Not only are the less glamorous components of your home more important in a practical sense skipping over these components such as plumbing, electrical, drainage and insulation can prematurely age your home and cause serious problems in the end. This was one of the biggest mistakes I personally made when I lived in my Denver Apartment. There was a massive plumbing issue and I overlooked it and decided to put in a new granite countertop. Long story short a $500 plumbing repair turned into a $5000 repair by me putting it off. Learn from my mistake!

Hope you enjoyed. Until next time.
