The Seven Habits of Highly Effective...Agents!

  • Habit One - Take the First Step.
  • Habit Two - Envision the End Result.
  • Habit Three - Have a Plan and Follow it.
  • Habit Four - What's the Worst Thing that Could Happen?
  • Habit Five - Understand the Emotions.
  • Habit Six - Be Patient and Understanding.
  • Habit Seven - Continue to Grow and Prosper.

Each week I will be covering each of these Habits I have put together! In addition you can review them on this site that is currently ‘under construction'  The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Agents !

I'll be writing a book and would LOVE your feedback and comments.

One of the great things about AR is the experience that is within this forum. I would like to be able pull from some of you when putting this project together. If you should leave a comment, it may be used in the book or the website!

Update here is a summary of Habit One - Take the First Step!

Isn't that true in everything that we do. I was at a Tony Robbins seminar once upon a time and he said something that I thought was relevant to this. If you have children it will hit right at home or if you have been around babies in your life you can also relate. Within their first year of a child's life we start teaching them to stand up. At first they just hold on to tables, chairs etc. until they get their balance. After they learn how to balance themselves we start working with them on walking. Pretty soon low and behold they can walk!

Tony discussed, what would happen if you never taught a child to walk? Would they just sit or lay down their entire lives? Would we have adults just squirming around on their bellies? Not a pretty picture! Thankfully we do teach children to take that first step....and that's what we need to do in our business!

What ever field you are in ....Real Estate, Insurance or some other ‘Sales' position you have to commit yourself to that venue. It will take confidence and a lot of it! Your real confidence will grow over time. The more transactions you have, the more families you work with, the more experience you gain; this will grow your confidence level. However, when you are first starting out you will have to present an air of confidence to the customers and clients you are working with. Without this, it will be difficult to put them at ease. The first step to grasp on to your inner confidence is to truly believe in the service you are providing. You have to believe without your service in the equation, the customer would be losing out! To help you with knowing how important your role is there are a couple of books I suggest you start with.

•1.      Walk Like a Giant; Sell Like a Madman by Ralph Roberts.

•2.      Real Estate According to Mike Ferry by Mike Ferry

There are many many great books I have read and I will have many more suggestions in the upcoming habits. However, these two books give you a sense of what it is like to be an agent. The importance of the role that we play in our customers lives. Use this information to gain your confidence about the service that you provide. That is how you take the first step into your career. YOU MUST BELIEVE!

Once you believe in what you do you can move on to Habit Two - Envision the End Result!

Hi Paige!

I believe strongly in habit one.  One of my favorite quotes:  "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step".  If you can get started and just take one task and one day at time, you can achieve any goals that are set.  Great post and good luck with your book!

Nice list, Paige. #4 is important for me--once I figure out the worst that could happen, reality is always better.

Hi Paige,  I love the seven steps. They all sound so simple. One thing that stands out to me is what a Broker told me. First, we have to show up for work. and treat it like a business, not a hobby. I love this business! I will be excited to read your book... Good luck!

I like what I see. I look forward to reading your book and following your progress here on AR. I do think 2 and 3 should be 1 and 2. I would move your number 1 to third position. I think you have to know where you want to go, and how you plan to get there before you can make that hard first step down the path.

Hello Paige,

Can't wait for the book. In the mean time I would like to order 3 Habit #1's and a side order of Habit #6 as our whole business is about patience and understanding, from our business affairs to client hand holding to our personal life. As for Habit #1, well this is the most important. Fear of strating has been the death nell to many a potentially good agent. My first mentor told me that "A grounded plane never flies...You must take off to soar" All you new agents out there reading blog after blog looking for just the right time to start...now is it. Take these 7 Habits and soar and fix what's broken as you go along.

We all have been exposed to marketers who will guide us on "How to.....", "Try my 90 day trial... " Just list to my tape and you will ...."

My opinion (and it's my opinion) is that some people naturally have the ability to achieve whatever they want.  Most people are not achievers and never will be.  Doing the best job you can at whatever you do (and it may not be a great job), not looking back and criticizing yourself (beating yourself up), etc., etc.  Enjoy what you do, look around at programs, training seminars, and just saying to yourself each day:  "WHAT AM I GOING TO MAKE HAPPEN TODAY?"

We only have today.

Hey Paige, sounds great, I would check into copyright issues with 7 habits of highly effective people first. I like the concept. I think babies though would learn if left alone to walk, I don't think we teach them as much as encourage them. Packaging the top agent habits is smart. People have access to so much information that packaging it is as valuable than the information itself.
